House with a seperate in law apartment
Looking to move to northern florida with our young kids and our aging parents under on roof, with parents having seperate apt. within the house. Is this a difficult find in northern Florida? Would building from ground up be the only option? What about buying an exsisting home and putting on an addition?

when you say separate apartment do you mean the whole separate kitchen living area bedroom set up or are you meaning a in law type suite bedroom with its own bath

When I moved here four years ago, I looked for a place with a granny pad and found a handful that were very nice. I looked in Mandarin and Jullington Creek. I found myself thinking- "I'll let mom have the whole house with the kids and I will take the granny flat"..... because the "apartments" were really cute!
Some folks consider a built-out garage to be an in-law apartment- LOL. But I have seen homes specifically designed for this purpose and they were very well-thought out. A good Realtor familiar with the area you like is, IMHO, the key to success. Otherwise I think you will waste a lot of time, as you are looking for something more unique.
BTW- we reconsidered moving in together and instead have townhouses a couple doors down from one another. Everything is a trade off- no pool, no big back yard for the kids... but psychologically it was a better decision for all of us. And in the long term- they can both end up being rental properties. Not trying to discourage you from your plans. But this was an option I did not think about initially that has worked well for us.

IN Avondale/Riverside there are quite few homes with a separate 1BR garage apt. The home are older and the neighborhood is great. Lots of trees, parks and pedestrian friendly. However for an older person a garage apt may not be the best choice

I mean a small apt on the ground floor with a BR, bath and small kitchen area. Looking in the Fernandina beach/Yulee area.

You'd probably be best served if you were to get a realtor to help you with that. They have searches available that would help them locate such properties, searches that generally are not found on websites. You'll also need to tell them what price range you are looking in, and if area matters, you'll of course need to mention that. There are places like you described around, but homes with a second kitchen are going to be much harder to find.

I saw in another post that you were/are considering Timber Creek Plantation. Check out some of the builders in there... I think that one of them offers a floor plan that has a separate guest suite (Standard Pacific's St. Anne floor plan).

House with separate Guest Suite in Yulee
Standard Pacific is no longer building in the Timber Creek Subdivision, they do have 2 homes still available but they do not have the St. Anne floorplan available. They are still in the Hickory Village Subdivision and have a St. Anne floorplan for sale that is ready for move-in. It is priced at $322,900 and has been on the market for some time. This home is all single story 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, 2447 sq. ft. with a separate guest suite attached by a small courtyard. Moderator cut: solicitation
