The competition/lap pool is open regular hours year round and is staffed by lifeguards—it is always open to residents, even when the swim teams are practicing (they usually leave one or two lanes open for residents).

As for the recreation pools, they close mid Oct as stated and I'm guessing it's an economics choice—they do not heat the rec pools, they do heat the lap pool (to an extent, it's still fairly chilly). I have a few friends in the community with their own pools and they don't normally use them from November through February either though.

You have to remember, while the weather here is really nice like 10 months+ out of the year, it still only gets into the 70s or so, and factor in air temp when you're wet, I just don't think the pools would be used that much. I often work down at the rec center and the lap pool is usually not very busy throughout the year.

The other large factor is that most of the folks who use the recreational pools tend be families. Outside of the summer months, most of the kids are in school or are busy with school work, after-school sports, etc.

This is totally true—I went there to work the other day at around 2pm and it was dead. Even after school had let out, the only ones there were the Loggerheads swimmers practicing
