We have a Broach School in Jacksonville. Hope Haven can help with the ADHD. You could look into these.

I've heard good things about the Greenwood school in Jax.

It would all depend on where you live and what exactly your child's exceptionality is and if they're in a self contained classroom or would be part of the inclusion. I could better answer your question when I know more.

my son has to have 1 on 1 attention but can also function in a regular classroom as long as he has the one on one para educator

my4kidsrboys- we are moving to the area later this month- and also have 4 boys
Our oldest is 9 1/2 and he has Aspergers as well as ADHD. I was also very concerned about the school situation. He has a 1 on 1 at school now, so I am working with the principal at the school to ensure that they have everything ready for him when we arrive. I would also be interested in knowing if there are any specialists in the area for Aspergers and/or ADHD.![]() |

I too have a son with Aspergers and am interested in this topic. He can function in a standard classroom but with occasional assistance. I want to stay public and find a school that I'm comfortable having him at.
We're looking to move this summer for my husband's job which will be by the JIA airport so we need to get researching on public schools. I had hoped to live in St. Johns county but that commute looks too tough, so I need to find a school I'm comfortable with in Duval or look north. |

If your son has a one on one (focused para) it's really not likely that he'd be in a mainstream class full time....and depending on his exceptionality, he may go inclusion...but again, if his needs are such that he has a focused para, then that's not likely either...not full time in a basic ed class

There's some very good programs in the Duval school system....I happen to work in an autistic class at one on the west side....if your son's able to be in a main stream class (inclussion) then he'd go to his home school...and that would depend on where you end up living.

Stay out of the public school system; it's a nightmare. I have an autistic son and we had to take him out of private school and move him into the public school system for a year so that he'd qualify for a McKay Scholarship. It was the worse move we ever made. If anyone suggests that you put your child in the Duval County Public School System - run in the opposite direction as fast as you can. It's been three years since my son was at Landmark Middle School and we're still dealing with the repercussions of that move. Currently, he's enrolled in the North Florida School where they cater to kids with all kinds of development disabilities up to age 22.
Stick to the private schools if you can - and use the local public school system only as a last resort. Another source of good information on this topic would be the local CARD office that's run by the University of Florida. They've been an invaluable resource to my wife, my son, and me as we work through the difficulties of his condition. Good Luck! |
