Is there a forum to discuss the pros and cons of national moving companies that go buy weight and mileage vs those that go by cubic foot, vs. the You pack and hire movers at both ends to load the truck, like ADF, etc. ?

We had a good experience with U Pack.

We used a full service moving company (United Van Lines) based out of northern NJ. We got 4 quotes from big companies like Mayflower, Stevens Worldwide, United Van Lines etc.. 2 were bound quotes meaning they couldn't charge us extra if the total weight came in over the estimate. Other 2 were unbound quotes (ie. they can charge us extra if the weight came in higher than estimated).

Perhaps we were lucky but one of the bound quotes came in at 7,000 pounds and other estimates were anywhere from 9,000 - 12,000 pounds. We didn't want to take the risk of getting hit with any overages so we went with the 7,000 pound bound quote from a reputable local affiliate of United.

No complaints here. They did damage a dining room table but they promptly cut us a check for $800 to replace. We didn't like the old one anyway so it worked out. Total cost to move a 4BR 2Bath home in NJ to PVB, including packing all glassware, utensils, mirrors, art work, tables, tax etc. was $6,400. The pros of hiring a full service company outweighed the do it yourself route for us, especially with a 1 year old (at the time) in tow. I think it cost us ~$1,600 more using full service vs the you pack (with 2 helpers in both NJ & FL).

I am leaning toward the full service mover but I am not sure if I should go by cubic Ft or weight. The prices are different. Either way we would be taking up a little more than half of a semi, which seems to be a consistent opinion. Aldo there are brokers and carriers. I put an inquiry out and I am being flooded with calls. Not sure why UPack went up $500 since March. The increase makes a full service hauler more attractive.
