Does any one know the laws on keeping chickens in Jacksonville? Or maybe you can point me to some links?

You can look around here:

Animal Ordinance

My understanding is that an individual can keep a small amount of chickens on their property, but I'm not sure what the limit is.

If you have an HOA, you might not be allowed to have chickens.

I have a friend here in Jax who has chickens in his backyard .

I KNOW this is an old thread but I am currently trying to figure this out for myself.

Anyone know if you can keep backyard egg producing chickens in Mandarin?

Look Familiar Eric? To keep chickens at a minimum this means your lot would have to be at least 100+ feet wide to keep it 50" from neighbors property line and also fairly deep in the backyard also. Don't think any of those standard subdivision 70X120 lots are gonna do it.

The important part of this ordinance is "Poultry shall be permitted in the AGR and RR Districts only." Subdivisions are 99.9999% NOT Rural Residential or Agricultural.

You know whats funny? I live way out in western Duval county on a large section of land thats been in the family for years and the last thing I would want on my property is chickens. Smelly, Noisy, Nasty, Smelly, Scratching, Rooster Crowing chickens.(did I mention smelly) Don't get me wrong I love me some good fried chicken with all the trimmings served nice and hot and fresh. We regularly drive 30 miles or so and eat at Beach Road Chicken Dinners. I do not, on the other hand, care for chickens on the hoof. With all due respect to poultry aficionados, I believe chickens are nasty, smelly creatures with the reasoning power of a turnip and the survival instincts of a lemming. I can tell you why the chicken crossed the road. Because a car was coming. Now if you all in Springfield or Riverside or even Nocatee want to raise chickens for their eggs, please go right on ahead and do it. And when it comes time to "thin the herd" so to speak, give me a call and I will be over, with a sharp axe and soon therafter Dinner will be served... Bon Appetit

Sustainable Springfield, Sustainable Springfield - Home, is leading the effort to create an Urban Agriculture policy in Jax, which is going great. Probably happen later this year.
