Christian11 is an idiot. You probably went into the wrong part of Jacksonville talking trash and almost got left in the St. Johns River. Westside Jacksonville is the WORST part of Jacksonville in terms of criminality. Any numbered street in Westside that starts with W is bound to be in a bad area. 103rd, 107th & 117th sts. on the Westside are the worst. Northwest Jacksonville is the ghetto section of the Northside.

Jacksonville has gotten considerably more violent. My hubby was there for 2 weeks for work and the city is quite rough!!
FYI, don;t lock your car up in certain parts of Jax or have your window smashed. They get mad if you lock up. In 2 weeks, 2 windows smashed, then the door was unocked (nothing in the car) and it stopped.
I think it might be bums sleeping in the car... thank God it was a rental, but it costs us $300 to fix the windows.

Move there and regret it. Maybe you will get killed by some crack user in Jax... have fun!
I am telling you reality, if you want, you can dream and think Jax is some Sugar coated Disney-type place and you will wake up... the hard way.

I definitely agree with that! My wife's brother was walking down the street on the southside of town, and was beaten/mugged! I'd never recommend Jax to anyone.

we live in Riverside, I don't park our cars inside a garage.
never had a window smashed.
(OK, one time - a neighbor was mowing his lawn, and the mower kicked up a rock that broke my window)
That was the only time in 8 years.

I don't remember, but my husband might. This was in 2002.
Honestly, I found certain parts of downtown Jax to be cute, but the majority of the town looked like downtown Buffalo, NY. Very rundown.
St. Augustine, on the other hand, was LOVELY!!
I was NOT impressed with Jax, specially because I did not feel safe. Oh the hotel we were staying at.... I think it was holiday Inn or Double tree.... very nice, certainly not in the ghetto.

Jax is like every major city, it has it's good areas and bad areas.
The sheer size of Jax(one of the largest cities in the US) means many different areas. You learn where these areas are and avoid them
Would I go to the NW Jax area where 95% of the murders have happened ? that would be a big no, but then again there is no real reason to be in that area if you don't live there.
I have lived in the Southside/beaches area for 14 years and have never had a problem
like dizliz we don't keep our cars in the garage and have never had them broken into
I cant tell y ou how many times I have left the car unlocked over night and it was still there in the morning
I also walk 4 miles at 6:15 every morning.
If you come here expecting downtown to be like Maimi or NY the the area is not for you.
The downtown is other than the Landing is mostly businesses. I have met my husband for lunch many times and have never had a problem.
There have been quite a few changes since 2002.
Read what folks have to say here both the good and bad, do your research then go to the area and see for yourself
A move is a major life adventure make sure it is a pleasant one
good luck
karla

ditto, Karla....
I've sometimes (accidentally) left my wallet or my cell phone in the car overnight, unlocked, and it's been there in the morning.
Actually, the only time I had my car vandalized was when I was 17, and some other teenagers I worked with pulled a prank.

Jacksonville has three of the top one hundred high schools in the nation. Two in the top ten. they have great schools if you put your child in the magnet program and are an attentive parent. There is a great opportunity for any child willing to work that is smart enough to handlle it Crime is mostly in the poor welfare types of negihborhoods. If you do not have the money to stay out of those neighborhoods do not move to Jacksonville.
