What is the best hospital in the area?
I live in Orange Park. What is the best hospital in the area regarding Oncology? I have heard OP hospital is not good at all. People have referred me to St Vincents, Baptist, Shands and Mayo.

I second that, Mayo has the reputation for being the best in that regard.

OPMC sucks.
1. I was having chest pains that I'd never felt before, so I drove myself there. I went into the E/R and told them I was having chest pains and some difficulty breathing. I kid you not: "Just sign in, have a seat, and someone will be with you momentarily." I left after ten minutes of nothing.
2. My wife had a ruptured appendix. She was scheduled for a CAT scan "no later than 5:00 a.m.", and no one else was ahead of her (since it was 5:00 A.M.!). At about 5:20, I asked if anyone planned on taking her in there, and the response was "You mean no one came and got her??"
I've been there twice, and I'm 0-for-2. Nothing positive to say, at all.

Triple that. Mayo by a mile. People travel all over the world to come for care here.

shands -
Shands Jacksonville Cancer Treatment Services
mayo -
Hematology/Oncology at Mayo Clinic in Florida
plus the brand new mayo hospital is opening april 12, 2008!
hope this helps you out some.
p.s. OPMC and memorial are sister hospitals, both for profit... meaning any money the hospital makes goes to its shareholders instead of improving the hospital.

Really? That's too bad.
My only experience with OPMC was when a family member had a baby there and they treated her really well and her room was nice....but that's maternity, so it could be very different from the rest of the hospital.
Memorial is the hospital we've used most often (2 surgeries there in the last few years). I've been really happy with them and the quality of the rooms (cleanliness, etc.). Their Wound Center is the only part I'm not crazy about, but that's part of Brooks or something, isn't it? I wanted to get out of there as soon as possible....it felt germy.
Baptist Hospital downtown is the one I've been consistently disappointed in. We don't go there for anything, but we have extended family that swears by it. We've been there for multiple room visits and no matter what the surgery or where the room was it was always dirty. One time there were literally flies buzzing around in the unclean bathroom that the patient had not even used yet (they didn't clean the bathroom before putting him in the room! ).
I've never been inside Mayo, but the Chief of surgery performed my husband's surgeries and he recommended Mayo highly when we requested a referral for another family member.
Best of luck Titanium, let us know how it goes.

wow, that's strange. all of the baptist facilities are magnet status, meaning the quality of nursing care is higher. (more on magnet status - ANCC Magnet Recognition Program) but it doesn't really matter as far as cleanliness goes, that's housekeeping's job... guess downtown needs to step it up!

why is that bad? t is in the share holders interest for the hospital to be good, it could be argued that a for profit hospital could be much better than a public or charity run not for profit hospital
