Hi Local Jacksonville folks,

I'm on several pages about JAX and I keep seeing posts that the snakes are out all over this year.

What gives?! They showed pix in the grass, on people's front steps... on the side of walkways, etc.

I have been to Florida many times and never knew that snakes were such a huge problem.

Is this just near low lying areas near water, or has it been throughout JAX this year?

Does anyone treat their lawns to keep snakes away?

Thanks!

Unfortunately the dry conditions are forcing the snakes to come out and search for alternate water sources this year. In the past month, I've seen 3 snakes on my property (we're in Ponte Vedra Beach - Palm Valley): Scarlet King Snake/Milk Snake (has alternating black-yellow-black-red coloring), garden snake and a baby water moccasin that scurried back into the preserve before I was able to get at it with a shovel. I only go after the venomous ones and leave others alone. Moccasins tend to be territorial so I try to get rid of them. If I didn't have a 3 year old running around I would more than likely leave them alone.

Haven't seen the fully grown adult moccasins that my neighbors and I killed last year (had two 4 footers and a baby).

According to a trapper I spoke to, there's really nothing you can do to keep the moccasins away aside from eliminating their food source and clearing your landscaping so there's no where for them to hide. I've learned to keep my head down and look for them in the shrubs/hedges and everywhere I walk. For the most part, they won't come after you unless you step on them accidentally.

Note: I do my own landscaping/mowing and constantly look over my property so I probably notice them more than most folks around here.
