We've been living in the Baymeadows area, just north of The Avenues Mall, since January 2009. When we first moved into our apartment, we stopped by the Best Buy (by the Mall) and there was a JSO motor officer in there. We told him that we just moved here and he said "you did move into one of the nicer and safer areas of Jacksonville. I patrol the area." Him saying that sure made us feel good........no, great!
Mandarin, Julington Creek, areas around the Town Center and Deerwood are nice areas as well.

Very good zip. It's suburban style but pretty much entirely nice and new.

Just remember, Jacksonville does have it's share of crime in certain areas. Yesterday, day and night, there were four shootings here. One was a robbery, two "drive-bus" and another where a person was killed. This all happened on the north/northwest side of the city. The Southside, Baymeadows/Avenues Mall, Deerwood, Town Center are much, much safer areas.

St. John's County, Beaches, Fleming island and Yulee are all nice and safe. I would avoid the northwest side. That's where all the crime is.

If working at airport, then check out Yulee area. Or possibly the new areas near airport? (I don't know much about that area, but perhaps others do).

St Johns County is too far from airport to drive every day during commuting hours. If a flexible schedule, then maybe...but Yulee would work much better, and you are near Fernandina for beach.

I live in 32224 off of South Kernan Blvd between Beach Blvd and Butler Blvd. South Kernan has nice, well-planned, established neighborhoods. I love the one that I am in and feel safe walking my dog at night. The elementary school is Chets Creek Elementary and many people buy in this area just for the elementary school. I see kids, some of them pretty young, walking home from the bus stop by themselves so I assume that most parents think it is safe. I also like it as I am only 8 miles from the beach and within 2-5 miles of retail stores. It is very quiet where I live and I was able to buy a house with a large backyard (for Florida) which was very important to me.

Hi, we actually moved from DC to Jax a year ago, never been in the city before and went through the very frustrating process of looking for a rental. We decided to rent for a year to give us time to know the city and figure out where we wanted to be on a more permanent basis. Ended up renting in an apartment complex, Cape House, zip code 32224 as suggested above. Very happy with that decision, so convenient to everything, easy access to main roads. My husband works downtown, his commute is less than 20 minutes. We are less than 10 minutes from the beach, 5 minutes from St Johns Town Center (main shopping area), grocery stores and Target are all nearby.
We have a golden retriever and a 6 yr old boy, so pets and schools were a part of the equation. Cape House is next to Chets Creek Elementary (10 rated school) and allows pets.
We are actually looking for someone to take over our lease, since we just bought a house - in this same area. Lease take over would be from Sep 17 to December 31, can be renewed after that. We have a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment with all the model apartment upgrades, including stainless steel appliances. Rent includes a garage, valet trash and pet fee. It's on a first floor with an open back porch so it almost doesn't feel like an apartment. Let me know if you're interested and I can give you more details.
