My parents grew up in suburbs of Detroit (my mom in Warren, my dad in Ferndale, I think) and most of my relatives still live in MI. My parents really like Jacksonville, though they live on the very west side, so they don't spend much time in the rest of the city. My pastor and his wife are from a suburb of Detroit too, and they've lived here for 15 years and love it. I know even more people from Detroit suburbs, too. It seems a lot of former MI citizens come to Jax. =o)

I don't know about the job, but I know that there have consistently been a lot of job openings in many fields down here, so I would guess you could find a few options.

As for the bugs, it is everywhere, really. Even nice places with good pest control can have roaches sometimes. It's just a fact of life, and (usually) has nothing to do with the quality or cleanliness of a residence. You'll also find lots of lizards (they're harmless, and I find them rather cute) everywhere and many other types of bugs. It's typical in tropical climates. =o)

Good luck!

I'm excited. I'm coming down there to attend a church in Jacksonville Called Faith Christian Center. . .I went to college in Oklahoma so I know a little bit about bugs and hot weather, but it was nothing compared to what I hear about Florida. I am from Novi in Michigan, where of course we do not get bugs like that in our homes, but I'm super excited and ready for a change.

Their are several big Mortgage companies here in JAX. Washington Mutual, J P Morgan Chase. I work at Chase and they are really looking for people in the Correspondent mortgage division. It and Wholesale are still growing very fast. Check out the web sites and see what is available.

Also, there is Blue Cross and Blue shield, and Merrill Lynch that have big operations here too.

If you get a good pest control contract when you come down, bugs inside are not a real problem in a house. APTs are another story as you probably know. Apartment Finders has a lot of info on the areas apartments, and it is a free service.
