Ann Wilson of Heart had this to say of Jacksonville:

"She not only walked away from her sister and the old band, she and her husband moved about as far away from Seattle as they could get without leaving the country. After falling in love with Key West, Florida, on their honeymoon, they bought a house and some property farther north, near Jacksonville.

“We were looking for someplace where a dollar is still close to a dollar, where we could buy a nice house that we’d be able to afford, get some land with it and live by water,” she said.

But she and her husband soon found out that politically, ultra-liberal Seattle is worlds away from their new rural neighborhood in Florida, an alt-right, onetime bastion of the KKK.

“It’s a huge change, especially where we live, right smack dab in the middle of Trump country,” she said. “We’re definitely living blue in a red state. Living in Florida has been a real eye opener. It’s made me learn to accept people who think differently than I do.”

I am not trolling by starting this thread. I am a fan of Heart, and Ann Wilson's description of Jacksonville surprised me, as I didn't see the City as she sees it - though I am unfamiliar with Jacksonville - having driven through the City a few times.

Is she off the mark, or is the City much more conservative leaning than what I had thought?

Jacksonville, in my estimation, is extremely conservative. At my gym probably 75% of the TVs are tuned into Faux.....err......Fox News by the gym staff. I don't know if Jax was a "one time bastion of the KKK" but basically anywhere in the south is going to be conservative unless you're in Miami.

Well, in the 2016 Presidential Election, Democrats and Republicans turned out in pretty much dead on equal numbers in Duval County (Jacksonville) -- difference of about 800 more Republicans -- so I'm not sure why she couldn't find some like-minded people.

Jax is fairly conservative for a large city, but it's pretty moderate overall. The article doesn't state where exactly she ended up but if it's "near Jacksonville" and "rural" then this isnt surprising at all. This is true of many parts of the country that are rural...

The Wilsons are Canadian. Also, consider MOST entertainers are extremely Progressive (liberal to some here). Their perspective is skewed towards the Left.

I don't think you need to be a Liberal or Conservative to see that Jacksonville and the south in general is very conservative. What is surprising is that she didn't know that before moving here.

She should have done her research on City Data!

But seriously, I’m disappointed to read that she & Nancy had a falling out. Sounds terrible. Ann’s husband hit her two nephews. I could see that putting a wall between the two sisters.

^ 2 points were exactly my thoughts. Her quotes were a bit much when I read the article IMO.

I thank you all, for participating in my thread. On the balance, the Jacksonville area sounds a lot like where I live (the Charlotte Metro).

The source article caught my interest, as the Jacksonville area is known for the contributions that it made to Southern Rock (e.g. 38 Special; Blackfoot; Molly Hatchet; Petty) - and I wondered what the current political climate of the area was/is.

On a side note: I too, look forward to the Wilson sisters mending their relationship and working together again.

Notice that the part about alt-right and KKK was not said by Wilson. It's commentary from the reporter.

If you read Wilson's quote, all it said is people have different opinions here and she's learning to be accepting of people with different opinions.
