Allergies and Real Estate
Some questions about Jacksonville:
1. What are allergies like in the area? Mold? Pollen? Ragweed?
2. What is a realistic price for a home in a NICE area, approximately 1000-1300 feet? A freestanding home is preferable, but a nice condo is a possibility.
3. What is the overall cultural climate? Conservative? Liberal?
Thanks in advance.

Depending on what your after I would say 165-250,000 will get you into a nice home.

there are a lot of trees and wild flowers here, so pollen can be a issue. Mold's not so much of a trouble unless you're moving into some ill maintained property. Get a allergy test done out here, they'll test you on common local/native allergens.

I agree with the posts on allergies. I have chronic problems, so depending on the time of year, if I miss my Zyrtec... boom. Sick. Jacksonville as a whole is still somewhat conservative. We are getting a little more liberal, (again, as a whole!), but there are still strong roots here. But it will depend on the area. Some parts are more "Southern" others are filled with people that have migrated to Jax or are just more forward thinking.

I don't have allergies, but the pollens have had an affect on me. The biggest difference is this: when I lived up north, the trees and plants leafed and flowered all about the same time, so there was a week or two of heavy pollens; however, here in FL the "pollen season" has been going on for a lot longer. As for molds and such, it's all about common sense and maintaining the house and yard to not allow the moisture to grow into molds and fungii. It's truly not difficult to maintain.
As for conservative or liberal values, I would say the former, BUT the strength of it all depends on many factors. In my personal experience (where I live ,and my circle of friends), I've not encountered such conservative closemindedness that I feel the need to run away screaming. I can be either conservative or liberal in my views depending on the subject, and I've never felt outcast for my beliefs.

Isn't that funny? I've not encountered such liberal closedmindedness that I feel the need to run away screaming. Guess it just proves Jax is a good place to live.

And there you have it! I've found that people here are generally strong in their convictions - on various spots of the values line - but are open to others .. at least publically ... what is said or whispered behind closed doors is a perogative - some may consider that being two-faced, but I see it as tolerance.

and I can't understand why anyone would want the kind of liberalism that has destroyed the big NE cities, didn't you come here to escape the deterioration found up there?
