The average starting is probably more in the low $725 range, but even then, that is only going to rent you something decent, not luxury.

Plenty of people pay rent of $850 or more to rent somewhere nice....so yes, $900 is within normal range for something of good quality.

btw, you should check with Shands to see if they can provide you temporary dorm housing for a couple of months until you get a car. I just remembered that a friend of mine did a rotation there and stayed in a dorm. I don't know if it is available to everyone and how it is set up, but at least that gives you some time to get to know the area better before committing to a longer term lease and you don't have to worry about the commute.

I am a recently graduated physician and I have got a position at Shands Hospital staring in June. The point is that I have been in the US for only 5 months.
I need help please about the suitable and safe places to live and the price range and how can I find apartments.
I am single, and I am starting my residency in Shands Hospital, and I am not looking for a fancy house,I need a comfortbale nice small one, it would be better for me to live at a walking distance from the hospital, if the area is safe since I dont have a car for now.
your kind advice would be appreciated my friends, since I am totally new to this.
Thank you
Hello there!
Before you start, ask the present residents where many of them live. That way, in the first few months you can hitch a ride in the morning. Then, in the evening or some days when you can't get a ride, take the bus... look to the Jacksonville Transportation Authority website Jacksonville Transportation Authority - servicing Northeast Florida with Skyway, a complex Highway System and a Mass Transit system which runs 65 bus lines. to give you the bus routes and schedules.
It is important to get a car ASAP, so appeal to a credit union and explain why you have zero credit history so that you can get a loan. I suggest you call HealthAmerica Credit Union www.hacu.ccop (broken link).
Good Luck!

It's located between Beach and Atlantic on St. John's Bluff. The area is fine. It's about 20 minutes to Shands. I've never heard anything about these apartments.

Ryan Oaks is brand new. It is in a safe part of town, but that exact location (meaning, where the building stands) is on a busy road near 2 busy intersections. So, for location and convenience, it is a really good location, but if someone was looking for luxury, a pretty view, or a quiet spot, it would not be a good location...just so you have an idea of what it's like right there.

I ran it through mapquest, and you're basically looking at a distance of roughly 12 miles and a commute of 20-25 minutes...that's not bad at all and you'd be just a few minutes north of the Saint Johns Town Center and you'd be less than 15 minutes to the beach, so it's good, central location.

One last bit about Ryan Oaks. I drive past there quite a bit and sometimes get gas in the Kangaroo station across the street. I do see a few - just a few - unsavory types that seem to be coming out of Ryan Oaks. My guess would be that the majority of people renting in Ryan Oaks are perfectly fine, but as you would anywhere, do not leave your valuables in the open in your car (when you get one) and do not leave your apartment unlocked when you step out to take out the trash or whatever .

There is a bus stop right across the street from the apartment building, which would be a plus if you'd be using public transport initially. On that note, I have a completely different idea for you on apartment choice and I will Direct Message (DM) it to you since I now know that you're open to other areas of the city and not wanting to be right in the same neighborhood as Shands.

I contacted Ryan Oaks and they told me that my income should be below 26000 per year to accept me!
they recommended a website for me to search for an apartment or studio..
I am a single person and I am a new resident physician at Shands Hospital. so I need a simple housing..I mean a bed and bathroom only may be

I checked the website and I found alot of options below 700$...but the question is ..which of those areas are safe? I need somewhere nearby to the hospital but it should be safe..
I would appreciate your opinions Jacksonville people

If you were interested in Ryan Oaks location, just down the road from Ryan Oaks is Pine Barrens and they have studios. It's nicely kept, and the last time I drove past, they had some signs stating there are openings and maybe some move-in specials? It's a small place, so there aren't usual;y a lot of opening, I don't think.

I have got this info through apartmentsearch.com, the help needed is to please help me exclude some of them so that I end up comparing between 3 of them maximum for example
I am looking for a studio or 1-1 Apt, I am a single person and I will be working at Shands Hospital, so the distance from the hospital and safety are important for me..it would be better living in a good community. I would like to get to know some people since I am new to the city..
Your advice will be greatly appreciated, I will trust your choice my friends..you’d recognize the addresses of those Apts and if they are good
