it's called the ripple effect, all these services need oil to operate, oil costs more rates have to go up, wait until transit fares and property taxes go up, police cars, fire engines city vehicles all need to be gased up and they pay what we pay, welcome to the new world order

The problem is our infrastructure stinks & is all oil driven without any alternatives. Everything depends on it & once those prices get outta hand, everything suffers. And I mean everything.
I was trying to get a plane ticket for my mom to come down here yesterday & a direct flight from Cincy to Jax shot up from $300 to over $600 in just a matter of days. She cant readily drive down here now either 'cause the gas prices would eat her alive. So what are her other options? Amtrak?? Yeah, right. It'll take her a week to get here.
Oh well, mom. Guess we can video conference & it'll have to do. Maybe you can cyber-hug your new granddaughter from KY & if you close your eyes & concentrate real hard, it'll feel almost as good as the real thing.
No one can travel, the dollar is tanked, utilities & overall cost of just being alive is skyrocketing. I guess its all worth it though, huh. Yeah, sure it is. Now lets go "liberate" some other countries before this administration is over.

Amtrak - Reservations - Select Train
Not impossible. Just not quite as convenient as we have come to take for granted, but also less risky.
I feel your pain. It cost me $100 to drive my car down here from Knoxville and nearly $300 in fuel to drive the moving truck.

you're probably one of those save the world types that would scream bloddy murder if the drilled for oil in the gulf off of FLA.
blame your local enviro whacko for a lot of the mess we're in now. There is plenty of oil out there but we can't get it because of them. Are you aware that about 50 cents per gallon goes to making gas conform to enviro standards?

Yeah, how 'bout not labeling me. And last I checked, there wasn't an actual oil shortage from the refineries & we have plenty of reserves. Gas prices were around $1.25 when Bush took office, now its almost $4.00 & who knows when it'll stop rising. But, nah. You're right. Its all of a sudden those pesky environmentalists causing all the trouble, huh. Gimme a break.
But I'm sure you'll debate that with made up facts & figures you pull outta thin air & fancy yourself an expert on the subject just like you do everything else. Debate it with yourself. Ta.

Now we know why they refused to add the stormwater/solid waste fee to their bill (saving tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars). They had this in the wings.
I think it's funny that Mike Hightower, on the JEA board, is evangelizing about the need for the increase.... the former head of the Republican anti-tax party is now singing a different tune.

It's true, we are so oil-dependent, it's going to be painful to pull away and turn towards other energy sources.
Fossil fuels are a finite source. We are reaching Peak Oil. You don't have to believe it, you can just wait and watch. These types of scenarios (JEA hikes) will just continue to play out.
We can't wait for a top-down solution to this, JEA isn't going to solve this, the politicians aren't going to solve this. We have to help ourselves.
I certainly don't know the answer to this, but I do see solar panels in my future, it's one way I can control my own energy production.

Not true, Peyton intends to raise the property tax to pay for the journey. So he's getting what he wants.
