What neighborhoods are good for safe and affordable rentals? Any suggestions?

I'm open to all settings. The main criteria is safety and affordability ($800 for a studio apartment). I'm a 50-something early retiree, not ready for a retirement village. I still want to work part time to keep busy and help pay bills. Ideally, the apartment would be walking distance to grocery stores, etc., though I have a car, but prefer walking.

you don't offer much to go on, try this site,
RealtyWEB.NET (http://www.nefmls.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi - broken link)

click on rentals and price range it will show you what is available

I think Riverside is where you want to be. you can get a 1 or 2 br in a shared multi-family home for 800. You can walk or skateboard to the Publix there. Also, you can walk around in the neighborhood safely. Younger crowd by age than you, but I am sure your youthful personality will allow you to fit right in

$800 for a studio can give you a lot of options, $800 would rent a nice studio.

We don't have many 55+ communities in Jacksonville - very few actually - so you don't need to worry about landing in a "retirement" apartment.

Walkability - as you describe it - narrows things down a bit. As Vdecapio mentioned, the more "urban" neighborhoods that surround the Jacksonville core will give you the walkability you're looking for. Some of those neighborhoods are safe, some are not.

Do you have any idea where you'll be working? There's no point in searching on one side of the river if your job is on the other...it's good to know what your commute might be like ahead of time.

Did you find a safe rental? I too will be relocating to JAX in the next few weeks. I would love to rent just a room for $600 max in a nice safe neighborhood since my husband and I still have our home in Wisconsini. I am 59 and prefer a "senior" community. Any ideas for me?
