Okay all you JAX long time residents, we know you know where to send all of us that are newbies here. Tell us your secrets! We have always enjoyed finding great 'hole in the wall' spots - you know, the kind of place that looks from the outside like somewhere you wouldn't dare go into, or the place that you didn't even know existed, but with word of mouth or by fluke...you discover the best place for _____ (you name it - Caribbean food, Mexican food, beach bar, fried shrimp, home cookin, etc.) and it's actually a thriving successful place with regular customers who love it!

Google these places. In general, Jacksonville doesn't seem to like hole-in-the-wall places because there are much fewer hole-in-the-wall type places even when compared to Orlando, let alone a big city. But here is a list of some stuff.
PhoCali-vietnamese Madrid-lots of cuban items on the menu. El Taino-puerto rican. Valparaiso Bakery-go before noon. Cuban coffee, pastelitos, etc. Puerto Plata-Dominican. El Ranchito-Colombian (although because it is Jax they put mexican items on the menu too). Brazil Grill-Brazilian buffet. Antojitos colombianos-colombian bakery. Pisco's-Peruvian. That is all I can think of off the top of my head. If you want a full list of ethnic food places in Jax, I can post that later. These are the only hole-in-the-wall places I could think of. |

*Metro Diner on Hendricks Ave (San Marco). I've recently fallen in love with this place again, they're open for breakfast or lunch:
Metro Diner *Picasso's Pizza on San Jose Blvd (Mandarin). My current absolute fave for pizza, though I don't get to go there very often (I'm not in that part of town much these days): main *Leo's Pizza Italiano on University Blvd & San Jose Blvd (Lakewood). Great little family restaurant, they do both italian and greek and they do eggplant really well .*Block & Barrel on US1/Phillips Hgwy & JTB...good lunch spot *Hala Cafe (Middle Eastern), 2 locations: 1- University Blvd east of I95 (Southside) 2 - St. Augustine Rd & San Jose (San Jose) - if you go to this location, check out the Black Sheep used book store across the parking lot .*Tijuana Flats, they have multiple locations (I like the Lakewood one the best - the nicest staff and I go to the Beach Blvd location too). TF has really good burritos, I could eat their black bean veggie burrito nearly daily !:Tijuana Flats (they're a chain but they're out of Orlando )
