Default Young married couple in need of help

Hello,

We are relocating from South Florida to Jacksonville and visiting next weekend to check out where to live. Could anyone help us in finding a nice, safe area that is fun for a young married couple??

We also plan on having a boat either at a condo with a boat slip or renting from a separate marina ... all depending on what area is the best fit for us.

Any suggestions would be appreciated -- thanks!

You'll find marinas and apartments/condos with slips along the Intracoastal Waterway and along the Saint John's River.

There are some great neighborhoods along and around both of these areas, it all depends on what you're looking for and budget, of course.

Maybe you can expand on what you mean by "young" and "fun"? Can you describe in more detail the kind of area you're looking for?

Are you buying or renting? Budget?

What kind of home do you like - brand new or something in a more established, historical area?

How about commute? Will you be working? Do you know where? This is a B-I-G spread out area, so commute is a definite consideration for most people.

We are looking to rent. We currently rent a condo on the beach in Ft. Lauderdale for $1300 and would like to spend less than that. We do not have jobs *yet* but will most likely work downtown.

We are sailors, despite our member name We looking to purchase a sailboat boat in the 20-25 ft. range

Ideally we would like to rent somewhere with a dock so we can be close to the boat, but if we cannot find that ... then we can store the boat elsewhere.

We are in our late 20's with no kids ... just looking for an area that is nice, safe, and close to things to do, places to eat, etc.

Any suggestion??

Thanks!

We've had both and prefer sailing ... especially with the cost of gas right now!

Assuming you will end up working downtown, a river location would be physically closer to work than an intracoastal location (though you could still consider an intracoastal location...it's still a reasonable commute to downtown).

The river neighborhoods are our older, established areas. You'll find a lot of the construction dates to the 1920's, 30's, 40's, etc. You could easily rent a small home for roughly $1300/mo and you might be able to park your boat right on the property or at a nearby marina.

These neighborhoods along the river close to Downtown tend to be some of the most expensive neighborhoods in Jax (on a per square foot price), so you may not get a ton of square footage for your rent money but you'll get a primo location. Some of the best restaurant areas and nightlife areas are in these neighborhoods.

You'll need to decide which side of the river you want to be on since the river bisects the city into a Westside and a Southside (there's also a Northside, but I don't know that it would fit into your considerations at all).

So if you choose to live in the Westside Region of the city, you might want to take a look at:

Avondale
Riverside
Ortega

(zips 32204, 32205, 32210)

If you choose to live in the Southside Region of the city, take a look at:

San Marco
San Jose

(zips 32207, 32217 and maybe 32257, but you're starting to get further out from Downtown now)

There are many other great locations, but this will get you started, you can always spread out from here. There's a nice marina on Goodby's Creek in the San Jose area (it's on San Jose Blvd).
