Winn Dixie, being a hometown company (based out of Jacksonville), is often a topic of discussion on the forum, and frankly, we're usually not too kind .

But here's something to be proud of...

Winn Dixie was approached by the animal rights group, PETA, to adopt an animal welfare program into their meat purchasing. From the initial request, Winn Dixie said they'd like to do whatever they could, and now they have gone ahead and adopted that program.

The program involves giving preference to suppliers that provide the better conditions for the animals.

This is a huge step in the right direction and I for one am very proud of Winn Dixie for making this commitment (I might even shop at your store this week to show my gratitude! ).

Wait what? Is PETA saying WD wasn't using suppliers with properly treated animals? If you don't adopt this program, we'll investigate and sue?

I don't know if it went down like that, but PETA knows who the suppliers are, and they were aware of the practices. What PETA is asking WD to do is to make a commitment to using a percentage of suppliers known to offer better conditions to the animals.

Now if WD had said "no, we won't do it", I'm sure PETA would have made that fact very public with negative press. But WD saw how it made sense for them to make this commitment, and PETA gave them positive press for it (which I'm sure was not the only deciding factor for WD).

For consumers who eat meat products, this ups the chances of eating a healthier product with less risk of diseases, so it's good for consumers of meat. For WD, the more of a commitment they make to the better suppliers, the lower their cost basis will become over time, so cage-free eggs might be more expensive to WD now, but by bringing that supplier higher up the chain, the price should drop for WD and they can pass the savings along to their consumers - so it's a win for WD.

After the last meat recall - the largest in US history - the USDA has been considering a proposal for video cameras in slaughterhouses to enforce animal welfare and food safety regulations and it's looking like it will be adopted. So what PETA is asking WD to do is the direction of the future for the industry anyway, I think it's good for all involved.

I'm glad to hear Winn Dixie is cleaning up its act. Compared to Publix, it's usually not in the same ballpark but it's nice to hear it's doing something.

I had a few friends work for both WD and Publix in both lower level meat department positions and then management and I'm sure there's work on all levels to be done.

If God didn't want us to eat meat, he wouldn't have made animals out of it.

Same here. I'm elated to know that Winn Dixie sells meat that is procured more humanely.

I stopped eating Mars candy, because they will not give up animal testing. When are the rest of these companies going to learn that the humane way is the better way?
