It is still a great town....just huge!

I figure this is not really bad press.....its just getting the city out there for people to go 'Really? Where is this beautiful jewel of NE Florida?'

It is also MY town.

I was talking to my wife about this last night and she agrees. (She has been there more often than I have.) Downtown Jacksonville is split by the Saint John's River and there are so many areas of town that are on major streets that it makes it difficult to walk around.

Of course I will have to see for myself, but I know that the area we will be living in, there isn't much one can walk to and feel safe about it.

Six days until the escape from Vermont. We have our fake travel documents, Jason Giambi mustaches and unmarked bills. Vermont is lacking in population so they may try to keep us from getting out. Hee, hee, hee........We have em fooled!!

I dont find Jacksonville any less walkable than Atlanta or Charlotte. I visited a relative in the Avondale area and it seemed pretty walkable to me.

I don't know ... I have a problem with the term "walkable city". To my mind any city in the world is walkable (except maybe Venice.) But since we're talking about US cities, it all depends on how far you want to walk, and in that sense, Jax is definitely walkable because no one walks an entire city.

But whoever came up with the term "walkable city" should qualify the term less broadly. Are we talking about before or after 9 pm? You may need separate lists for nighttime walkability versus daytime walkability and I know one or two cities that would fail both lists.

But like Riv said, I don't give alot of credence to that list.

Default Walkabout nation all of a sudden?

When I was young and worked at the mall, the seniors would come and walk around it when the stores were not even open yet, it was good for exercise...

So why are we freaking out about walking too far? I don't live in Jax, may, but seriously, since when is all of FL in general a nice place to just walk for hours...yeah, if you have a Zephyrhills huge gallon with you... YOU'LL DIE PEOPLE! It's hot and humid out here. I love how people call Key West a great walking city, but then, I do a walking tour, and it's like...ahhhh...we GOTTA WALK!!!

It's Florida, it's hot, it's humid...UM, ever heard of GATORADE? it came from Florida so the football players wouldn't die...So who seriously goes on walkabout in Florida anyway...besides the homeless people! Get a bike, or better yet, a motorcyle. Sheesh!

Jacksonville, wipe it off man, that poll was ridiculous. I am sure that Fargo is real walkable too in January...

I've been researching this for a few years now and have discovered that Florida in general is very car dependent. The only truly walkable areas I've found are the master planned communities like Celebration.
