Hello all! I finally found a place to live and will be moving down in a week! I will be living in the area of Lakewood north of University. It seems like the best of all worlds..affordable and convenient yet relaxed and safe.

Any advice on the area? The new Publix I read about in another thread...where is that going in and is it going to be ready soon?

Thanks!

I have a friend that has lived in that area her entire life and she loves it.

I'm heading that way tonight to the big church on San Jose for a Back-to-School Splash! So perhaps that's a good sign that the area is family oriented? No idea!

Good luck on your new home!

I used to work in Lakewood. It's a nice area. It has just about everything close by.

IIRC, the new Publix on University is going where the old Rowe's/Albertsons was.

The new Publix is moving along. They had to go through some zoning hearings, I think those are over now, so they should be breaking ground soon. They are bulldozing the old Albertson's, so they are changing the entire property...it's going to be a big project and should do a lot to change the face of that corner (University Blvd & St. Augustine Rd).

Lakewood is a great area and you'll find it to be very relaxed and safe, as you said, and quiet - amazingly quiet considering how close it is to downtown .

Walkscore also recently rated Lakewood as the 13th most walkable neighborhood in Jacksonville, and I think that's accurate, there really is a lot to walk to there - shops, restaurants, grocery stores, lakes, the river, etc...

Thanks for the replies! I agree with quiet....I could hear nothing but something chirping at 5 in the afternoon from the back deck. Nice!

Does Lakewood have a neighborhood society or anything? I have been trying to google it but I'm not coming up with anything.

Yes and no . There is a neighborhood association connected with the city (a lot of the older neighborhoods have these fee-free associations with the city).

I'll DM you some more info so I don't bore the others .
