For what it's worth, the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice lists 32208 as a high crime zip code. However, I'm sure that there are some safer areas there. I work with many people who live in the northside. They have really strong families and have lived in their neighborhoods for years. Also, some of the schools that were doing poorly have been made into magnet schools and are now quite good (relatively- Duval has terrible schools. My kids are in "A" schools, but I would give them a low C.)

You can go on the Jax Sheiff's website and see crime stats for each area. (coj.net then click JSO link). No matter where you are moving, you will want to check the sexual predator database. There are some areas with multiple offenders and predators living there. http://offender.fdle.state.fl.us/offender/

http://www.city-data.com/zips/32208.html. Unfortunately 32208 is a high-crime zip code. 123 registered sex offenders live in this zip code so you DO NOT want to move here, your neighbor could be a child rapist for real. NW Jacksonville is where 95% of the violence takes place but as a whole, Northside is pretty safe, however be wary of the following streets:

Myrtle Ave.
Wilson Rd.
Moncrief Rd.
45th St.
Riverview (NW)-3rd Ave off Lem Turner Blvd.

Those are Northside's problem spots. As stated before, as a whole Northside is pretty stable.

Not discounting or disagreeing in any way, but just want to state that child predators are EVERYWHERE in this city and across the whole country. They are in the best and the worst neighborhoods...these monsters cross all economic boundaries.

So it's a good idea to always check before moving your child into any neighborhood. Another good site is familywatchdog.us. Of course, these sites only show the predators that are registered, and these sites can't account for a predator moving near you at a later time, but they're all we have for now.

Check out JSO's website and you can do a radius search for crimes...not always the best predictor, but great to know.

You're no safer on the Southside than you are on the Northside or Westside. True, you have a greater chance of getting your car shot up on the Northside or Westside but people forget that much of the crime that happens on the Northside or Westside is due to being involved in criminal activity. I live in the heart of Jacksonville's Northside, 32208. I keep an AK-47 and M-16 (both of which I can own legally). Because I don't look for trouble, it doesn't touch me. The Southside is rapidly becoming the top crime spot in the city. There have been documented stories of people being shot in Arlington, and couples with children being jacked in Mandarin, which is on the Southside. Northside ranges from ghetto to filthy rich, especially with all the new development taking place near the airport. I'm willing to bet that gentrification is going to invade the ghetto parts of Northside and Northwest Jax.

I lived in JAX on the northside for a long time. Zip code 32226 is a nice area and 32218 north of I-295 is also very nice. Also some very nice areas in Nassau County from Yulee to Fernandina Beach. There are many nice new subdivisions in the 32218 area I mentioned. They do need to build a new high school on the northside. First Coast High School is a beautiful school, but it is overcrowded.

forget the hearsay, I going Jacksonville north side to find out for myself tomorrow if i don't post a follow up dial 911 Fact is there is crime everywhere and most criminals don't walk, they drive to a crime, so they can get you no matter where you live.
Where I currently live is a known so called high crime area but you just have to pick your area where you want to live. Every place has safe spots you can live...also the coincidence in America seems to be most "so -called" high crime areas are also majority blacks make me wonder if this is simply a matter of segregation. None of my co-workers dare live in the area where I do, even though its cheaper. I drive a company vehicle and been parking it here without incident. Most violent murders are drug related or domestic related just identify those areas and don't live there. The sheriffs office already know which homes and streets have known drug users, that's the best source for real info.

Ok I made it thru some parts of northside and came back in one piece. I have to admit most of the posts on here were correct, but there were some good spots also. If you have google earth or yahoo maps you can follow the route that I drove through, some parts I dare not stop. heading north towards Jacksonville I took I95 and took exit 355 to Golfair Blvd and headed west. That put me smack in the middle of northside and I was not impressed at all. There were several abandoned businesses and apartment complexes that look like a ghost town in some areas. Golfair took me to Moncrief Rd where I turned right.I headed to New Kings Road had some ok areas. I headed south to Richardson rd turn into that area and drove around. Predominantly black neighborhood clean and quiet, seems low to middle class families but it has older brick houses some of which were small but I won't mind living in that area.A lot of windows on houses had those metal bars from the old days of Burglar proofing homes, which i think is good. Both side of Richardson Rd I drove through were well kept and clean neighborhoods. I did not go towards the river nor to zip 32208.
Next I headed further north towards Capper Rd and Dunn Ave area. On Capper Rd if you don't mind living directly opposite Florida Community College North Campus there is a very nice but small sub division of mainly modular upsacle homes called Cambridge Estates Richmond American Homes: Your New Home Builder
There is also www.dreeshomes.com on the other side of the campus. Seems like further north is ok as some new subdivisions and businesses are getting established. Since I can't afford those I also checked out the Campus Oak's Apts behind the college and it is also a quiet area with rentals at $625 and $650. There are also some good area just south of 295 in the vicinity of the airport that comes off Biscayne Blvd. The only thing problem I can see is the lack of retailers but they are coming I sure but mostly closer to the airport.
One thing maybe someone can anwser for me, What exactly is the Northside as opposed to the Westside? Is I10 the "boarder"? Is there an Eastside, no one talks about there but i guess it would be the beaches?
