Hi all -

Back in Jax after 4 yrs. away. Great to be home. Posted a request about a month ago and got good responses but alas, my printer was down and I didn't take notes. Sorry. So I'm posting again. We have a 7 yr. old with some dev. delays due to malnutrition and neglect before we adopted her from Guatemala. She also has asthma --not severe, but would like someone familiar with that --maybe even an asthma specialist. Would like to find a pediatrician familiar with children from third world countries, as these children have different issues/milestones, that some pediatrians are not trained to recognize/understand. We're older parents, and over the years have had some of the best and worst docs in Jax, so I know the good ones are out there. We don't want the type that are know-it-alls, try to bully the parents, ego-docs, alarmists, or slackers. Looking for someone I can talk to easily, is open to alternatives or suggestions, isn't offended by requesting a second opinion (if needed/desired), intelligent with common sense. Beaches or west beaches area would be best, of course, since we live at the beaches, but don't mind going the distance for a good one. Moms I've spoken with at the beaches aren't too happy with their pediatricians, but I haven't had time to talk with many. I hear some good things about Dr. O'Reilly and Dr. Mary (does anyone know her last name)? Would love feedback on good and bad experiences.
Also, if anyone knows how I search for previous posts I've done, and responses, thanks for the info. I tried, but have a brain injury, so I'm REALLY technically challenged. Also, how to have responses sent directly to my email.

Thanks much. See why I love Jax!!!

Under "My Settings" you can edit your email preferences. You'll be able to get alerts that you have a Direct Message waiting for you in City-Data, but the only way you can have a member send an email to your personal email address is to give them that email.

So if you're speaking to a member by Direct Message (DM) and you both would rather converse through your regular emails, you'll need to exchange email addresses (or make yours public on your settings).

This is how it works as far as I know, but I'm a little technically challenged myself !

Here's the "About" forum for lots of How-To's:

I'd take her to Nemours Childrens Clinic for any specialty needs. All the specialists are in one place.

The Dr. Mary you heard about is most likely Dr. Mary Soha. She's wonderful. She & her dr. husband reared a bunch of boys themselves. She's a fun loving person who's very serious about health care and is extremely smart. I think that's a good combination - big heart, great intellect, tiny ego.

OTOH, we dealt w/ a Dr. David Weiss who was, IMHO, the complete opposite. I don't know if he's still in practice, but if so, I would never permit him to treat any of my family.

Thanks so much for the info, and keep it coming! I don't know what an IMHO is, can you explain? I will give Dr. Soha's office a call to see if I can get an "intro" appt. and have her check my daughter's allergies/asthma needs. Any downsides to the office I should know about (we all have our imperfections)? Thanks -- is there a way I can send you my email address in case there's a private comment involved? Thank you. Cindy

IMHO = forum-speak for "In My Humble Opinion"

For private discussions, you can use Direct Message right here on City-Data - just click on the person's name you wish to speak to privately. Beyond that, it is up to individuals whether they wish to exchange email addresses, but Direct Message does the job just fine and keeps everyone anonymous .

Try Dr Benitez. He is at the beach - the website is 24hourkidcare.com. He does a lot of humanitarian work in impoverished countries so he is likely very familiar with your needs.

Default service for internationally adopted kids

Hi there,
I hope you were able to find a pediatrician for your child. I wanted to also let you know there is a program called HANDLE (The HANDLE Institute - Natural, Gentle Treatment for Autism, ADD/ADHD, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Learning Disabilities and more!) that I've seen be very helpful for children with developmental delays for all sorts of reasons, including institutionalization (international adoptions). The HANDLE program assists parents in helping to organize the child's nervous system through simple daily activities that can be done in the home. I primarily work with children with autism and related disabilities, but through my training have seen it also be helpful for adults and children with Tourette's, Developmental Delays, Traumatic Brain Injury, Parkinson's, etc. Basically any issue that has a neurological/neurodevelopmental component has potential to be helped through this home-based program. They published a study with 5 adult brain-injured patients in the Journal of NeuroImaging in July 2006, and this is available through their website.

Hope this is helpful to you.
