amen dutch. I lived in within 5 miles of either baltimore or DC for 22 years and never had one problem. Then I moved to an all-white rural neighborhood in FL and was promptly attacked in the middle of the street and sent to the ER by my neighbor's fighter pit bull. Moral of the story- you simply can't make assumptions on what will happen to you based on where you are/who you're around

I agree-- let's just say there's a certain set of antenna that you grow living and working in the inner city area- and a respect I'll say.. I taught inner city HS for 19 years-- many students of color would tell me that they could bsarely go into a store in the mall without getting "that look" so, I came to understand why some carried a "certain attitude" I can't blame them.

The high crime rate in the Northside and part of the Westside of Jax has a lot more to do with poverty than race.

That is horrible! I am very sorry that happened to you.. but, I was born and raised in Jacksonville FL and spent all but 2 years of my life there and I have never once had anything like that happen to me. My husband and I are living in Palm Coast right now and we HATE it here! We will be moving back to Jacksonville within a year. Even with us living in Palm Coast we still spend ALOT of time in Jacksonville. My mother, father, sister, brother, grand parents, aunts and uncles all live in Jacksonville and have lived in Jacksonville their whole lives, none of us have ever had anything like that happen to us. No, wait.. when I was very young (about 6 years old) we lived off of Casset Ave. (Murray Hill, the west side.. downtown) and my moms car got stolen. The next day the police found her car and arrested the men who stole it.. besides that, nothing bad has happened to anyone in my family and we have all lived their our whole lives. I have been robbed in Palm Coast and my grand parents, well, my grand mother was robbed in GA.. never in Jacksonville though. I know that it isn't the safest place to live, but it is a very good place to live. Any city is going to have crime.. There is no city that doesn't have crime. Again, I am sorry that happened to you, but I have to say that I feel completely safe in Jacksonville.. like I said I have lived there for all but 2 years of my life and never once had anything like that happen to me.

I agree.. I lived off of Casset Ave. in Murray Hill on the west side for about 10 years (when I was very young) and that is the only place anyone in my family has had any kind of problem.. my moms car got stolen, but that was it. I lived off of Kernan for a few years and then moved to Orange Park. I lived in OP on Fleming Island in Eagle Harbor for 6 years. I LOVED it there.. We were a few miles from Jacksonville so we werent in the middle of everything, but we werent far away from anything. Fleming Island is (for the most part) very clean and well kept and I really liked that.

A well founded fear of black violent crime by whites is probably the biggest impediment to good race relations today. Lots of innocent young black men are stereotyped as thugs because of the actions of the ganstas out there. They have to endure heightened police scrutiny when ever they go about their business even if they are successful professionals due to this stereotype based on the gansta culture.
It would be a win/win situation for both races if this gansta culture was squelched by society just like the Klan was squelched in the South in the 60s.
This is the elephant in the living room that everyone sees but is afraid to talk about for fear of being slandered as racist by the PC leftist cadre. Even prominent blacks like Bill Cosby are slammed by the PC cadre for raising these issues.

If his comments were so ignorant, why are they justified by the fact that crime in the North side is worse and oh hey, way more uneducated and poor blacks (and whites!) live in that area. Recently a young African American (well, it said he was black) boy shot at a Police car in a neighborhood and they had to chase the kid down through the woods for four hours before catching him! I think he killed someone- I forget. It was near Dunman Ave, I think. Jacksonville, Florida. Yeeuupp. If not violence, all people seem to like is loud annoying concerts, quiet symphonies (which are appropriate in their own right, I must surrender that statement as I should not lie), country (no offense it just is not my style in comparison to many), clubs, and more prominent than any I have seen- hookah! UGH!.... also what happened to laying in hammocks and running after each other on grassy areas in parks that are in between neighborhoods that are filled with safe, happy and loving people? Where did my dream go!!!!! I hate that thing they did where they brought in HUD housing. Grr. And many people are smoking hookah as young as 16, fyi. I hate that stupid tube shaped device. All it causes is uncomfortably irritating night crawler children.

The crime is exaggerated so bad here... Jacksonville is like any other big city except for how huge it is... For the person that claims DC and Baltimore are better they are both worse in terms of violent crime... Jacksonville's crime is extremely isolated... In fact I bet if you were to look at violent crime per square mile Jacksonville is probably one of the best...
Baltimore: Violent Crime per 100,000 1631, total population 624,000
DC: Violent Crime per 100,000 1347, total population 588,000
Miami: Violent Crime per 100,000 1492, total population 410,000
JAX: Violent Crime per 100,000 1,022, total population 800,000
Quit trying to paint Jacksonville as the most dangerous city in the country, it stacks up very favorably with other major cities and like I said the crime is very isolated... It never even makes the top 10 most dangerous cities list...

I dont know why such an old thread is pulled up but the size of jacksonville actually HELPS the crime statistics, not hurts.
I agree Jacksonville has pockets of crime that are much worse than other spots but thats why the statistics are dilluted. Miami, which is only 500k in the city yet we all know Miami is much bigger than 500k. However, since inner city crime is the worst in most cities including jacksonville and miami, it makes miami look like its worse than jacksonville. However, if you were able to add 300k from miamis suburbs where all the rich people live, this would then drive the crime statistics down.
Thats what jacksonville gets, all the suburbs where crime is low, to drive down the crime statistics since jacksonville is 4 times larger than some cities.
With all that said, I still agree its in pockets but where these pockets are its REALLY bad.
