After living in Jacksonville for five years, I am still seeking the definitive answer. Is the proper name for US 1 Philips (one L) or Phillips (two Ls) Highway? I've seen it spelled both ways on street signs, on business cards, even at the same intersection. If I google it I get hits on either spelling.

Nearly every day as I drive down Baymeadows I see a sign that reads

PHILLIPS HIGHWAY
SECOND LIGHT

When I reach that light, the street sign says
PHILIPS HWY

So which is it?

It's spelled "US1"

I think it's 2 L's - Phillips - I just checked on coj.net and that's how they have it on there, but of course, that could be wrong as well.

Haha, I used to work with a girl who formerly worked for the city or county or something in Georgia. The dept she worked did the street signs and maps. She told me, heck, they didn't know, just took their best shot at it. From what she said most of the people in that dept didn't exactly get A's in spelling. So there ya go. Who needs education to work for city or county govt anyway?

....and we wonder why this country is so messed up....

Interesting that coj.net uses two Ls...Jacksonville.com uses one, which also seems to be the style of the Times-Union (perhaps I ought to contact an editor there to confirm).

I think the street was named after a man, and the correct spelling is Philips. They remained wrong for a long time. It was on the news awhile back when they were doing the changing of the signs.

Just for the record:
"The Club also secured U.S. 1 South of Jacksonville as it is today. We had the honor of naming it Philips Highway after Judge Philips and were in charge of its dedication when Governor Sholtz cut the ribbon to open it on July 12, 1934. "

Yeah, me too. I've never noticed that there were two spellings.

Speaking of spelling, my street name ends in "o". I've seen city maps that have it ending in "d". I guess those employees who cannot spell, cannot type either.
