I have been in this town 10 years--and they are just not fond of outsiders. A couple of years ago a local finally admitted that. It is best to sort of know someone and get in that way.

So true, generally speaking. I'm from St. A. When I move back next year I will be removing the location of my previous jobs (nyc) from my resume and putting FSU degree at the top even though I have enough experience that its not typical to put your degree at the top. I will be dropping the "I moved back, I'm from here, etc" as much as possible.

Default How to get a job

I just came across this old thread and noticed that no one has mentioned that the best method for getting a job, anyplace, is to research then target 20 or so places which would be a good fit, apply in a way appropriate to their corporate culture, then FOLLOW UP on your apps. Just dropping an app off will get you nowhere. Keep going back until you've made yourself known then ASK "when should I check back with you?." Also handwritten thank you notes for each interview even a 5 minute standup interview at the cash register. I notice no one has mentioned the assistance available at your State Employment Development Department or whatever they call it in Florida. The stimulus jobs are largely being handled through them.
Finally, remember, the only difference between "persistence" and "pest" is a few letters. Be polite and no one will call you a pest.
Just a few thoughts from a former placement counselor.
