Hi, I'm a S Floridian transplanted to a small town outside of Raleigh, now it seems as if we're going to be moving to the Jax area. I absolutely love the lifestyle of where we live now, excellent schools, great community, a small town feel, with the conveniences of Raleigh nearby, so what I'm basically looking for is the same thing in the Jax area. We don't have to be IN Jax, just based out of there, so my question is, where would I look to get great schools, low crime and a small town feel? Now don't tell me to stay where I'm at LOL, that's out of the equation. Traffic doesnt scare us so commuting is not a problem, we're from S FL remember Any help would be greatly appreciated! We're going to be renting initially to get the 'feel' for different neighborhoods, but would appreciate some input. Thanks!

lol.. I've been living in Jax my entire life minus a short 6 months in the Orlando area and the past month I've been living in St. Augustine. St. Augustine is about as good as it gets for those qualities but even then.. ehhh.. schools aren't good. They focus WAY too much on standardized testing. Historic St. Augustine is about as nice as it gets for what you are looking for.. but it's crazy expensive to buy in historic St. Aug.

Even in Jax proper, there's a small town feel (but obviously not a small town population).

The overall crime stats for Jax aren't so hot, but it's not evenly distributed, of course. The city is 840 square miles, so some areas will be high crime, others very low crime and all kinds of variations in between.

Traffic and commuting don't have to be a big issue here, but remember - Jacksonville alone is 840 square miles, and that's not even including the surrounding counties. L.A. isn't even 840 square miles. So you want to have some idea of where you'll be working or at least what you need to be near. Otherwise, you can be driving great distances here, it is really spread out .

Hey, riveree, I agree with the gist of your comment, but found it a little confusing when you used LA as a comparison. LA isn't even close to the size of Jax, it's barely even half of our area. On the other hand, if one were to assume you were referring to the MSA, then actually Greater LA is quite a bit larger than Greater Jacksonville. Just for clarity's sake...

In any case, we are really spread out down here.

Just meaning that people consider L.A. to be a spread out mess and Jax is even larger than that (land-wise).

That was my point, then. When I think of LA as "a spread out mess" I think of the LA metro area. Which is actually about 1200 sq miles larger than the Jax metro area (even including St augustine).

Thanks for the information, work will be in the 9000 block of Phillips Hwy, I was looking at Fleming Island, which seems to have good schools, from what I've read, am I off base w/location?

You are 100% on the money. Fleming Island is your best bet.

FI has great schools and low crime, and the commute to Philips Hwy won't be that bad (comparatively speaking). FI is a great place to live and raise a family, and most of what you need (groceries, home and garden supplies, restaurants, gas, a post office) are all there.
