I am spending a few months in south Georgia. In early January a good friend is going to come south for a visit and we are going to spend the weekend in Jacksonville/St. Augustine. I haven't been out this way for five years and I remember very little. I am looking for suggestions for nightlife and the bar scene. We are NOT into country and are looking for a good mix of places to go. We are both in our 30s so a little more "mature" crowd would be nice. I'd like to be able to hear myself (and her) talk. Also important is that the establishments be in relatively safe areas with parking and hotels close by. Unfortunately I am now on dial up, so my web surfing is quite slow. Any help would be MOST appreciated!

I'll try to get you started here....

This is Downtown Jacksonville's website. Scroll down the page and you'll see some info on Downtown nightlife with links:

Downtown Jacksonville : Arts, Sports & Entertainment (http://downtownjacksonville.org/things-to-do/arts-sports-and-entertainment/ - broken link)

I wish there was one great website to direct you to that covered all the nightlife in Jax, but there really isn't (at least I haven't seen one yet). This listing for Folio Weekly might help though:

Club Directory For Jacksonville & Northeast Florida

Lastly, search City-Data with the keyword "nightlife" and limit the search to the Jacksonville forum and you'll find all our past discussions .

It always seems like you are trying to push people away from jacksonville. When someone asks for suggestions on their trip why say "save your gas and don't come"?

Anyways, since they ARE planning a trip down here- Def. check out jaxbeach as there are a variety of bars within a short distance as well as nearby hotels. The area is pretty safe overall. San Marco and Riverside also have some cool restaurants/bars for people in your age range.
