Yes, provided you can afford to live in Miami-Dade's ritzier areas but if you don't have the financial means to do so, you have no choice but to live in the 'hood and the crime risk in the hood intensifies, even if you aren't into drug hustling.
Just curious - what do you think is the "hood" in Miami/Dade? The county is really big - and has neighborhoods ranging from ultra poor to ultra rich. In this metro area - we have a more narrow range IMO. Ultra poor is about the same as in Miami/Dade - but ultra rich is about 1/3 Miami/Dade (in terms of prices). Robyn
I agree crime stats don't paint the whole picture. My father lives in a senior facility in 32256. There's a fair amount of theft there - of drugs (older people tend to have a lot of drugs). We called up JSO after a couple of thefts he had - to report them - and they laughed up their sleeves. Now my father keeps his drugs in a safe. Robyn
Yeah, gotta keep those stats down....
Following her bypass last spring, my mom was in rehab where your dad lives and a very nice purse was missing when she left. It really surprised us, as everyone, without exception, was so kind and professional.

Crime stats don't paint the whole picture, but neither do anecdotes. I have a friend who lives in Mandarin off of Baymeadows and haven't had an incident in 11 years - though they could be mugged tomorrow. My point is that everybody has a story which is why stats are more likely to sum up the areas where crimes are more prevalent. JSO data shows that.
We tend to believe in stats only when the stats agree with the picture we have in mind.

Miami-Dade is really big, not denying that so it's got pockets of ghetto all over but the largest concentration of ghetto stretches from Overtown through Liberty City/Pork N Beans and up to Miami Gardens where it terminates at the Broward/Dade border. Numerically, it'd be from the start of OT and terminate at 215th St. In Miami-Dade, you can take NW 27th Ave from its starting point and go north for the entire drive and see what I'm talking about.
Where in Florida were you born? I looked at some of your messages - and you seem to live in the Orlando area now.
I lived in Miami/Dade for 20+ years before moving here 15 years ago. And although a lot of crime there was drug related (people breaking into your house and stealing things or hitting you over the head to get money to buy drugs) - the same is true of a lot of crime all over the state. And it really doesn't matter to me why someone is committing a crime - doesn't make the bump on my head feel any better. I doubt there is much (if any) crime due to a "failure to communicate in terms of language". But there is certainly crime in most metro areas in Florida that happens when tourists wind up in the wrong place (Miami/Dade used to have "Happy Sunshine Faces" on I-95 exits that were safe - but they were deemed racist and removed).
FWIW - I was only a crime victim once in Miami/Dade (office burglary - high rise building) - never here (but I don't live in Duval County). OTOH - my parents' house in Lighthouse Point and brother's house in Miami Beach were/have been burglarized numerous times. And - on the third hand - I have always avoided living situations that were riskier in terms of crime (always lived in high rise condos with lots of security in Miami/Dade - and looked for extremely safe neighborhoods in this metro area when I was deciding where to build a house). Robyn
Im From Orlando. And Everyone On Here Tries To make Dade Seem SO bad When it really is not. I would love to move to dade but Im not Fluent in language so it makes no sense. Media puts a fear in people with Miami and it sickens me because like you said there are some excellent areas in the county who really is not bothered by the overwhelming crime.
What a load of !@#$! Crime is crime whether it is drug-related or due to tourism. Ask any victim of crime and see if he or she gives a ----. JSimms is correct. Duval crime is largely concentrated in the north and west of the county which is not to say that the rest of the county is crime-free. In Miami-Dade there are no pockets, crime is everywhere. BTW I don't live in Jax/Duval, not trying to bash one part of Fl over another like you.
Actually Miami Dade DOES have Pockets of crime which is heavily concentrated. Opa Locka for example. Murders here are common, where as, In Indian Creek Or Sweetwater, Crime is not a hot topic. So Crime is not all over Miami Dade County, ANy county for that matter. Thats exactly what Media has done and want people to beleive and if that has already been concentrated in certain peoples minds then so be it. the 2 million + people that live in Dade County, try telling all of them the entire county is dangerous, thats PA-****IN-THETIC

As For you that had NOTHING to do with this. You obviously took this personal as well as my other post about Jacksonville Duval being the most crime concentrated city in the State of Florida as it obviously is not a statement to honesty, rather than used for an idiom. Crtisize Jacksonville? For what? Don't they do that themselves? You can be offended as much as you want be my guest, but to sit and try and tell me in any sort I am wrong about Jacksonville being the oddest city in the state of Florida then be my guest to debate it in that forum. To let the feelings of you get the best of you personally to argue a statement you misunderstood on this thread with something from another thread deserves no further thought, have a good day.

Again, was not used to actually mean Jacksonville is the most dangerous city in the state. If people knew more about their beloved city they would know that what I said obviously is not true being Orlando and Miami are far more dangerous than Jacksonville, even St. petersburg. Like I was saying Media makes it seems as though Miami is just all around bad and that other cities such as Jacknsonville or Tally or Tampa are just goody goody tooos in Florida when in reality all of Floridas cities are struggling with this issue.

Well you can believe what you want to believe. I am just showing you the 2010 City Crime Rate Rankings published by CQ Press, an independent resource. Jacksonville is 89th while St. Petersburg is the most dangerous.
St. Petersburg #31, Miami Gardens #40, Miami Beach #42, Orlando #46, Miami #51, West Palm Beach #59, Pompano Beach #83, Gainesville #86, Jacksonville #89, Tallahassee #92, Fort Lauderdale #101, Melbourne #116, Tampa #155.
I don't live in Jacksonville. I don't have an axe to grind. We shouldn't be arguing about which city has the most crime. It is bad all over.

I'm most certainly not arguing about which city crime is worse in because I agree all over the state of Florida has crime in each cities. And Those numbers might be true they might not, but I garauntee you when you go to St. Pete you certainly do not feel as though its the most Dangerous Versus West Palm Orlando Miami Garden Ets. That was my arguement about the Media by I do agree.

You might be thinking of my late FIL in River Garden - as opposed to my father in Carriage Club. Or perhaps not. Doesn't matter - you'll find petty theft in all senior facilities (not necessarily by employees - residents will "steal/take" things from other residents). As well as residents putting things away - not remembering where they put them - and then claiming they were stolen. It wasn't unusual to find dentures in the potted plants in River Garden . Robyn

One thing to keep in mind. Rational people take different precautions in terms of living depending on whether they think they live in Mayberry - or the south Bronx. Crime rates aren't only the result of people who want to commit crimes. They're also the result of steps people take to avoid being crime victims. Robyn
