Poor economic times.
Lack of economic opportunity/stability.
Drug abuse/Illicit drug use.

No idea.
I am giving the people the benefit of the doubt that people are inherently good... but with the influence of drugs their threshold to carry out improper actions is markedly lowered.

I am not from Jacksonville, but saw this post. I live in Baton Rouge, La and the people here seem to have gotten more "desperate" for things than ever. We first moved here in March 2005, before the big hurricane and it has changed so much, but the times are tough and I agree with this poster!

In addition to hopelessness. When you don't see a better way, you'll take what someone else has in order to feel better about yourself.

Jacksonville's crime didn''t just crop up recently due to the the bad economy. It's been going on for years & from what I understand, really started getting intense 5-10 years ago.
It's easy to just blame it on drug abuse, which is probably a big part of it. At least the really hard core addictive drugs. But the root of the problem is probably a combination of bad parenting & poor upbringing due to lack of finances, bad role models, environment, broken homes & poor education. Jax seems to have a lot of that going on.
It's a vicious cycle of bad parents that probably have no business procreating raising bad kids.

Jacksonville has not always been known for crime. When did this happen?
