Is any part of I-295 officially called East? It runs west from I-95 in northern Jax, turns south for several miles, and then turns east and crosses the river and ends at I-95 in southern Jax.

I think he just means the name change from 9a to 295. The "east" is irrelevant. 295 only uses North and South.
I'd like to know as well. I thought the last interchange was just finished?

9a and 295 now make a full continous loop. I have seen signs that say 'I295 begins' or '9A begins' but have never seen them referred as east or west, just north and south.

I think I read that it will take a year from now to get all the signage made or something like that. I can certainly can understand that length of time considering the ton of signs for getting on and getting off and all the new exit number signs that will be needed.

(Goodness - sorry about the typos in my above post - seriously suffering from TWOL syndrome (that's Typing WithOut Looking).
While on the subject of 9A/295, I'm quite curious how it will all work. I cannot fathom how it will be anything but confusing!
Looking at other major cities with loops...
Washington DC - 495 is a complete circle, but 95 is designated on the eastside part of the circle. Obvious to a traveler about where to go.
Baltimore - 695 is the circle with 95/895 running through the city. Again, obvious to a through traveler, but how does it work to know which side of 695 to take if that's the choice?
Atlanta - 285 loops around in a circle with north/south 85 and east/west 20 running through the middle. Not so obvious to a traveler - how does it work?
I'm thinking about the tourist who's traveling I-95 south and arrives at the intersection with I-295. I'm curious what the signs will say? Will the tourist continue straight on I-95 through Jax or will he be diverted to either the western side of I-295 or the eastern side?
Currently, if I want to give directions to my house to this tourist, it's easy to say get off I-95 and go south on I-295 to exit 10. Or if this tourist wants to go to Jax Beach, I just simply say get off I-95 and head south on 9A.
Once the renaming is done and it's all I-295, my curiosity is peaked - what directionals (north, south, east, west) will be used to explain which side of the loop one should take?

It IS Confusing!!! 295 and 9A make a continuous circle around JAX. When you're in Orange park (the southwest corner of the loop), 295 south is actually going East, however it is called going south. At the 95 interchange is where it turns to 9A which only goes north (along the east side of the continuous circle). And again at the north part of the loop, when 9A meets 95, then it turns into 295 south (which would be heading west, until it curves down to head south on the west side of the loop) .
SO, if you are driving south from GA on 95, and you want to go towards the east side of the looop or the beach, you'll take 9A south. Ifyou want to go to the west side or Orange park, you'll take 295 south.

When i left in 1995 they were just starting the northeast part of it from I-95 to the Dames Point bridge on the eastern side of the city so i'm really glad to hear that it's now a complete loop.

I know! I like the 2 different names! I guess we'll just tell our guests to hop on 295 and keep driving in a circle...we'll stand on the side of the road and wave them to our exit, LOL!

That is the west portion of it. 9A is suppose to change the name. It would make the Jax Beltway official.
