Default Lawn Care

I live in the beaches area and my lawn's a bit of a mess with a number of bare spots. After spraying for bugs a few months back, the tech suggested I might want to cover the bad spots with lawn sand. I had some bad luck doing that three years ago when the "lawn sand" I had delivered turned out to be filled with chunks of clay and other stuff. It actually contributed to killing off parts of the lawn and I ended up with a ton of weeds. I don't want to make matters worse and after checking a local business, it seems to me that what he called Builders Sand, a yellowish sand, rather than the black fill dirt might be the best choice. I'd like to hear from any lawn experts out there, also if this is a good time of year to lay it down or should I wait until spring?
Thanks.

I am not an expert, but I do have a nice green thick lawn. Not now of course because of the hard freezes we have had. Question, I am not sure if this will matter, but is your lawn exposed to salt spray, did the tech have anything thing to say about that. I would wait til spring before doing anything because some of your lawn may return from the roots. You still will have time before the real hot weather arrives in June. So do any repairs, laying dirt, or resodding well before the summer heat. Its less stressful for grass and plants if they get a good start before the heat of summer arrives.
