If you want the best answer to your question follow this link to find Jacksonville Lawyers and call them. Ask them what they think. What I expect you will find is that may of them are grads of Florida Coastal and have never left because the city is so amazing.

Hate to perpetuate this thread, but I read this article that I thought might be pertinent:

Graduates accuse law schools of scamming students - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/graduates-accuse-law-schools-scamming-students-021529890.html - broken link)

Not saying yay or nay to FCSL, but I have long considered Cooley and Coastal to be similar institutions. Also, does anyone else find it funny that a bunch of lawyers are suing a bunch of lawyers? And they all probably have separate legal representation. But if the recent grads were representing themselves in the class action suit would their schools call that employment?

Not saying its un-doable, I just would think twice about using a new lawyer.
I should rephrase, I apologize for not being very clear... she graduated within the last few years...(think its been 2-4 years...somewhere in there)

She was not wealthy (still isn't), she worked another job while she began opening her firm. Not exactly sure what the process was, never really asked. I'm just super proud of her.

She is practicing in a medium-large sized town 80,000+ people

she is definitely not the only lawyer in town!!!!!!!!

I understand your concerns, however, everyone has to start somewhere right? Even the best lawyers now had to start somewhere?

I believe it was always her dream to open up her own firm, and she just went ahead and did it. She did have another job as she did this mind you. I know it's not glamorous but I don't believe that was what she was going for.

Well good for her then. I wish her nothing but success. And yes when you said she just graduated I was concerned. I have a family full of lawyers and know what it takes to start your own firm from scratch, have even helped a couple of them with financing.

yea I'm not sure if she saved the money herself or took out a loan or what to start the firm, but she's busy and seems...generally...happy... says its a lot of work and stress, but once it gets going it'll be well worth it

are there any tips I should pass along to her?

I'm not a lawyer, I'm a retired disabled vet and used to run the family ranch but now I just advise my sons on what needs to be done and take care of family matters.

Best advise I ever gave anyone was to a young 2nd Lt in Desert Storm all I said was... "Son! No matter what, just keep on driving on and don't let anyone tell you it can't be done. Just do it to the best of your ability, and remember ..It's easier to ask for forgiveness than it is for permission'' Not sure it applies but it is good advise.

My son is thinking about law school and we have moved from NY to Florida. He will have been in Fl a year soon. Of course, we'd like UF law school. Here is my 2 cents, though for all of you struggling to plan your future and go to the right school. I ended up with my own small law firm (which was what I really wanted because part of the impetus for attending law school was the desire for independence) -- and when you have your own firm your clients aren't really scrutinizing your pedigree. Most general clients don't have any clue what law school is good. So -- if you think you might want your own business, make sure you pass the bar, get a license and be your own boss!!

So are you opening a small law practice here? If you are - good luck. We have too many lawyers - and too few clients (who can afford to pay decent fees). Things were different 20-30 years ago. Robyn
