riverside is perhaps the most walkable neighborhood in jax right now (well at least in and around 5 points), san marco is that way as well on the other side of the river, and parts of springfield and avondale. Even if you live in these places, you will need a car to get to work, the car is a part of life here. Give downtown a few years if the city can keep development coming, which it will, and you will move there instead. There is soon to be a grocer and more retail/restaurants and nightlife.

I like the riverside/Five Points area. But to get it within walking distance you will pay a pretty penny.

Downtown Jax is quite deserted after working hours. I don't think you will have the same feel as walking in Manhattan after 6pm. Everybody leaves their offices and head home. So beware!
