La Nopalera
They do have other locations throughout the city.
Another Mexican restaurant that is usually busy is Don Juan's on San Jose, south of I-295.

Orsay is on Park Street in Avondale, it's the same space where Crush used to be. It's quite tasty and they have a pretty great happy hour at the bar, too!

Thanks Riveree! Good ideas! The brewery sounds terrific especially - I wonder if we will get there in time on Saturday to take a tour? I bet my hubby would love it!
I really have no big problem with chains, particularly ones that we don't have in Michigan. I can't see going to Applebee's anytime soon, but that's not because it's a chain. It's because it sucks. I really live in the middle of nowhere so I get excited when I see a frickin Papa Johns. But, unique places are fun too.
I don't think I'm hip enough for Bistro AIX! I'd stomp in there like "Hey y'all, okay if I bring my goat in here or should I tie him to a parking meter?" Sure looks nice in there though! Something's up with my internet security settings, it keeps dropping my connection when I try to load the Metro Diner site :-(

If you like seafood, try Singleton's Seafood Shack on the south bank of the river in Mayport. It is a shack, But don't let the appearance scare you off; it's excellent.
Across the river is a bigger shack, the Sand Dollar.
And in Jax Beach, try Parson's Seafood.

Roy's Hawaiian Fusion is in Jax Beach, but not on the beach, it's in a shopping center. Their food is just seiously amazing!! It is a chain but with very few locations. Great date night location!
If you go, you MUST get the melting hot chocolate soufle!!!! It is beyond words. But be sure to order it when you order your food because it takes them awhile to prepare!
Check it out: Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion Cuisine

If you want a "real" Jax Beach restaurant/bar, then definitely go to Landshark Cafe.(right on third street @ the beach) Its a great local hangout/bar with great food (fish tacos, wings, burgers, salads, seafood, etc..) and wide variety of brews. Its fairly cheap too. I recommend the shrimp tacos (blackened).
Also, definitely go to Caribbee Key in the Neptune Beach Plaza (right by the beach). Once again, great local seafood/caribbean "inspired" dishes.
Both of the above have live music most nights of the week. Have fun!

I've always wanted to go to the Grotto, but I've never been brave enough. Is it just a bar that serves wine?

If you want to try spicy Indian food , Flavors and 5th Element on Bemeadows Rd. are excellent. Another new Indian restaurant opening this Friday on San Jose Blvd, Masala Indian Restaurant. This is the old Celantro Restaurant with new management

Indian food! YUM! That's something we can never get where I live now - although I don't know how adventurous my hubby will be about it. I'll try!!
Why is the Grotto scary? The website looked like wine tastings w/ tapas. LUNCH, lol!
The beach bars sound great...can you tell me where Mayport is in relation to Jax Beach or the Baymeadows area? I'm a little clueless. Singleton's sounds right up our alley but when I googled it I got very confused as to where we should be going. When we went to Key Largo a few yrs ago we found a "shabby" little diner next to our bizarre tiny motel and they had the best beer deals and biggest grouper sandwiches I've ever seen. So I'm really a fan of beach shacks!!
It is starting to look like we will spend Sat & Sun actually ON the beach near the North Jax Beach "nightlife" and then move toward Baymeadows on Monday morning for hubby's work stuff. Poor guy has to be at trainings every day while I am within walking distance of St. John's Town Center with his credit cards!
