fsu813,

Of course I was only generalizing. I am sure there are pockets on the west and north sides where people feel completely safe. I was only making the point that the city sprawl isolates those areas from the rest of Jax.

If you can show the data I would believe you. There is no reason why pharmaceutical sales would be any better in Tampa or Orlando than in Jax. The truth is opportunities in every sector are bad all over, although I would think that pharm sales, or any other job linked to the medical profession, would be one of the more available lines of work today.

If it weren't so sprawling then perhaps the police presence would be more efficient.

We (the city) can do something about police efficiency, but the sprawl is here to stay.

Pros:

Generally a family friendly city
Lots of outdoor activites - water, parks, nature
Plenty of inexpensive housing - investment or current
A growing city
Big city events and draws with small town areas too
Lots of sun
Low taxes (generally)
Unique historic areas

Cons:

Mostly Conservative (morally, politically, everything-y)
Many areas are racially segragated
Very spread out (sprawl)
Current mayor isn't very forward thinking when it comes to transit and downtown
Suburban home values are predicted to fall much more

^^^Agree with all your pros, but some of your cons I think are pros, too. Conservative as a con? I consider myself very conservative, yet forward thinking. Morally conservative people are not the ones committing crimes, think about that! And look at all the conservative cities in the country...i.e. Houston, Dallas, SLC, Indianapolis, Nashville, Atl, Charlotte, Charleston, here, to an extent Denver still, Phoenix, these are the cities that are still faring alright generally speaking and some like DFW and Houston are still booming! Why? Because they are conservative, right to work, pro-business, good people, Bible belt, warm climate. The more liberal a city is, the more it is probably in the tank right now, and the more people are on welfare that live there, and higher taxes.

Most cities are racially segregated. I agree with your other cons, though, as much as I like public transit and ride it here in Atl or in NYC, I do not think Jax is ready for anything, and a system would have to be paid for with higher taxes, so the citizens probably on a mass scale do not want one right now while traffic is still not terrible.

Jacksonville is not a real city in the sense of the word. By name only. It is just a large town. The job market stinks unless you want to work in one of the many call centers for bread money. It is also the murder capital of Florida and full of violent crime. There isn't much to do and is terrible for young people. Just no activity.

Look elsewhere. I wouldn't even consider it.

psouth,

I read some of your other rants on other forums. Nothing constructive. You hate all of Florida, period.
You must be a very unhappy person.

Having lived in Jacksonville I am speaking from first hand experience. Is it not the murder capital of Florida? Are violent crimes and home invasions not a problem? Does it not have an anemic job market at best? Is it not the call center capital of the Southeast? Was it not voted the worst place to live for young and single people by Forbes? Isn't it true the hapless Jaguars can't sell enough tickets to even make it on TV? I'm sorry but it's just a very boring and pseudo conservative Bible Belt town. At least get some high end shopping like Macy's and Nordstrom and Bloomingdales and Neiman Marcus before being considered a real city with modern shopping.

With Atlanta and other big thriving cities being so close why would any one choose to live in a second rate town with no growth like Jacksonville?? Sorry.

Macy's and Nordstrom are overrated and overpriced department stores, that's real talk. If Jacksonville needs a well-known department store it would be Foley's or Bloomingdale's. I'm young and single and happen to like Jacksonville. I'm a true Jacksonville representer.
