NewtoFlorida, I moved here from the North in 2002. What you say is true. Unfortunately it does not change. I have spent time in the last 7 years moving city to city in Nassau County searching for integrity, honesty, and "cooth". I and my children have been stabbed in the back numerous times. As you had said they are very clannish. However you cant scrutinize what they only know. As any clan these traits have been passed down generation after generation. Like you, I have tried to explain this issue and they have nodded their head in agreement, when I walk out the door the knife stabs in the back and on goes the gossip. IT IS LIKE THIS EVERY TIME. The southern mentality is very different. It is a different culture here. Intelligence, courtesy, and professionalism have different meanings here. You cannot fault them for what they do not know. You will kill yourself trying to figure it out. Its a way of life.
Like your husband I work in the medical field and experience this daily. Unlike women, men seem to be able to blow it off. Women are more "sensitive". So I just get along doing my thing in my home. I avoid intimate contact with anyone (at sporting events, school events etc). I stay superficial. TRUST NO ONE.
At home I instill honesty, integrity, and "cooth" in my children. Give them examples of what not to be like when we are out in public etc. (I have older kids now). I keep my good friend up North to talk to and occasionally see.
I know money means alot to these people. Whether your a doctor or a surgeon or a nurse... we all have bills to pay and have responsiblities. But most of these gossipers live in trailers or beat up houses. Dont let them fool you. This is why they have to hide their insecurities by running their mouths. They dont want people to know they live in a trailer! figuratively speaking.
