Was this talked about?

The frequency of home break-ins has gotten me worried about home security.
Common method mentioned recently on the news seems to be kick-in and grab-out. It happens during broad daylight when no one's home. Alarm system don't help when no actually alarmed. Police response is usually too late to catch anybody.

Care to share some preventive measure you've taken, or how to best protect ourselves?

Few things I'm totally aware of already:
There's no true break-in proof method, if door doesn't work, they'll use the window.
Metal bars all over? I don't think that's allowed in many communities. Or it's against fire-code.
Not everyone likes dogs.
Alarm system's really just for peace of mind.
Conceal weapon? It doesn't work when you're not home. Traps you say? That'll just get you sued BY the burglar.

Exterior, sensored light fixtures with lots of wattage serve well as deterrents to burglaries. Anyone approaching a door or window with hopes of breaking in will be unpleasantly surprised to have a spotlight shining on them! Additionally, instead of paying big bucks for a security system installation, get a hold of a couple of stickers from one and put on your windows. Another excellent deterrent would be a barking dog.

It usually works if you alarmed it while at home.

When no one's home? It takes some time for the monitoring company to verify the situation, once verified, THEN they'll send out a patrol unit. That's all the time it takes for the fast burglar to grab whatever they can and run for it.

Replace the screws on the strike-plate in your door with 3" screws that will attach the strikeplate to the wall frame instead of the door trim.
