Default Fernandina Beach Fl or St Simons GA for retirement

My husband and I live in Atlanta and are both retired. While we liked Atlanta during our working careers it is time to leave and find a "softer easier way" to live. We have stayed several times on St Simons and have visited Fernandina Beach and like them both. We want to be near the water, have available shopping (Target, Grocery stores, Home Depot and a good Ace Hardware) Any suggestions or input would be very helpful. Thanks so much. Sue from Atlanta

Default Similar

Both islands have similar climate and surrounding natural environment.

St. Simons is a "nicer neighborhood" although Fernandina Beach and surrounding areas have many first class residential areas.

Florida is great if income tax is an issue. FL does not have state income tax. If property taxes are similar, FL may provide a lower tax burden.

Fernandina Beach is closer to a major city, Jacksonville, which provides better options for entertainment, health care, shopping, and travel (major airport).

St. Simons Island is nicer. I'd rather live there if everything else is equal. My aunt has lived there for year.....very nice.

St. Simmons feels a lot cozier than Fernandina. You can tell they care much more about quality of life issues and the environment. For example, In Fernandina, they will scalp trees back 50 ft from all the powerlines till the tree dies (and of course, AIA is a nightmare of never ending overdevelopment and deforestation!) . In SS, they will work hard to allow healthy trees to create a canopy over the roads (even if it means some healthy limbs around the power lines). It's a small example, but I sense there is a much more progressive mindset in St. Simmons than Fernandina. You will do fine in Fernandina if your life is very centered around church/bible or golf (which unfortunately, mine is not and I can't quite adjust to the extreme conservatism here).

PS: Another pet peave of mine is that there is not one tree law in the entire county (except incorporated down town) and I am so sick of the daily sound of chain saws cutting down oak trees in the Barnwell Rd neighborhoods (for years now) that I could puke!

I guess it depends where you live and what you do.

I prefer the beaches here.
I like the trees and native vegetation in my neighborhood.
I am not a conservative, and not interested in church, bible or golf. (Look up my posts concerning Fernandina Beach.)
There are beautiful canopy roads on Amelia Island, but it's quite true that A1A is a nightmare and needs to be dealt with.
