Moving to Jacksonville in January
My husband is transferring to Mayport in January. So we are in Maryland an I have to find a place to live over the internet. I need help. I want to live close to the base. I want to rent a house, townhouse or condo. I have a small dog, cat and bird. I have found some places but I don't know anything about the area. So if I list the I hope you can help me. I need the rent to be under $900. Some are houses so I will put the area. If you can tell me if it is safe and nice that would be great. I know I am asking alot but I don't like just going by the website. They always lie. If you recommend any place that would be great to.

I wish I had knowledge about the places you've listed, but I don't - however, I'm sure others who do know will reply. But I can say that you should probably cross off the Orange Park location in 32073 - that would be a nightmare of a commute to Mayport. So would commuting from 32205, 32244, and 32210 -- all of these are west or southwest of Jacksonville proper and on the west side of the St Johns River.

I agree with mawipafl that you probably don't want to live west of the river due to commuting.
Do you have the address or zip code for Drayton park I did a search and came up with 2 areas
I did a search in the Southside 32256 and found these condo rental listings

FYI:Communting from the Westide of the River to Mayport is not difficult:
I-95 N to Heckshire Drive. Bam. There ya go.
The time it takes would vary widely, depending on where you're coming from.
I do agree that you could easily find a apartment, townhome, perhaps even a house to rent that isn't that far away though.
Since you asked about the Murray Hill area, here ya go:
(2006) Murray Hill: Neighborhood Photo Tour | Jacksonville FL | Metro Jacksonville
(2008) A Murray Hill Photo Tour | Jacksonville FL | Metro Jacksonville
(2008) The Avenue of Progress: Edgewood Avenue | Jacksonville FL | Metro Jacksonville
(neighborhood organization) Murray Hill Preservation Association » Home
You may be able to tell from the first photo tour to the last two that the areas has been on the rise for a few years. It's a semi-historic neighborhood situated right next to the posh Avondale area and the white trash "westside" area. The area itself used to be pretty white-trash, but it's become a poplular place to buy for the wanna-be Avondalers, who can buy a house relatively cheap and fix it up very nicely. Mostly bungalows (1000ish sq ft) here, with few 2 story houses. A very nice "Four Corners Park" near the center of the neighborhood, with a nice children's play park in the area as well (with sports fields, playground, etc).
This area would make about a 40 minute commute to Mayport.

I live in the area and I would look for houses off kernan blvd in the 32225 zipcode. You will be in a good area crime wise and a very short commute to the base. You will also be in my opinion, close to the most desireable thing in jacksonville, the beach.
32225 is your number one I would say, 32224 second and 32246 third unless you want to live at the beach but I do not know those zip codes but I do know they have great schools if you need schools.
Whatever you do, do not live in Orange park if your working at mayport.

We are moving from Pax River.
My husband would only like a drive 30mins at most. So I took off all the area codes that were listed. I want a 2 bedroom but I don't think I can get that for $900 in an apt, that isn't scary.
I will look in the areas everyone suggested. We are coming down there the second week of November but will only be there for one day. So I have to figure things out by then..

I would definitely think you could find a nice place in 32225 for that rent and then have a 10 minute commute to Mayport. I live in 32225 right near the Wonderwood (Expressway?!?!) and it only takes me like 5-10 minutes to get to Mayport. If you want a townhome, there are plenty off of Kernan. If you want to rent a house, I would look in the Cobblestone neighborhood because I think you might find a few things that meet your price point. Good luck!

I found one apt that looks nice on the website but has a bad review on the website. The Retreat at St. Johns. Have you heard anything about them? I will look those up, Thank you
