Jobs inJax?
Is it just me or does the job market in Jax seem to be lagging more than in other places in the country?

Yeah its on par with a lot of over major cities, and definitely on par with other cities in FL... There are plenty of jobs here if you're in the right field...
Don't expect to get a job anywhere right now with a burger flipping degree... (psychology, political science, sports medicine, etc...)

Jax lives with service industry and not many new mortgage loans going on now. We are a product of financial and mortgage industries. We need to diversify out of these low paying call center type jobs. We need some manufacturing and the city needs to give space and incentives to git 'er done. Manufacturing jobs lead to ancillary jobs, which we need more than ever now. I asked the TU fact checker to tell me the number of jobs from the stimulus.

Well........wife has a Bachelor's in Accounting and she is finding literally nothing for herself right now and my experience (no college degree though) is in Purchasing/Inventory Management and I have found the same, NOTHING! Of course our age isn't helping either (60/61)! AND, after Thanksgiving, other than retail jobs, most everything else will stop. My past experience has been that most companies will not do any interviewing during the Christmas Holidays!
For some occupations, it's definitely tough out there........ALL OVER, not just in Jax.

Jacksonville's economy likely to recover before other Florida cities, but when?
Real estate data aggregator Metrostody says while Jacksonville is poised to recover sooner than other areas of the state, the city’s climbing unemployment and 3.7 percent job loss rate keep a recovery on the horizon.
Anthony Crocco, director of Metrostudy’s North and Central Florida divisions, said in a release today that because the Jacksonville metropolitan area got a much lighter boost from the housing boom of 2004-06, its continuing fall back to earth will be less prolonged than in other cities in the state. And because Jacksonville’s economy also is buttressed by military bases and a shipping port, its recovery will be quicker than Florida cities that are less diversified, he said.
Hobbling the metro area, however, is a lack of job formation, Metrostudy wrote.
Between August 2008 and August 2009, Jacksonville metro lost 23,000 jobs. At the same time, the metro area’s unemployment rate reached 10.7 percent in September after holding at 10.6 percent for three months.

I will give you an example of the healthcare market which we keep a close eye on. For nursing jobs, each hospital here has very few postings, some as few as 5 which is VERY LOW compared to other cities. The hospital my wife works at which is memorial and is a HCA hospital which is nationwide, there are hundreds of jobs in the city of Denver where we want to move soon where as less than 15 here in Jax.
The stange thing is, Gainsville also has hundreds posted so I dont know what is up with Jax and jobs right now in the healthcare field. Still, nationwide, the job market is still way down compared to 2-3 years ago and even in Jax it is better now than 6-8 months ago.

Jax has two of the most prestigous and exclusive medical institutions in the US: The Mayo Clinic & UF Proton Therapy Institute. Only a handful of these in the US.
It also has all the other breaking and high-end treatment optionsm, with various hospitals being recognized nationally for certain specialites. With out Mayo & Proton, we wouldn't be anything special. Those institutions draw patients, experts, personnel, conferences, and visitors from around the country & world, literally. A rising tide lifts all boats.
Thats why Jax is actively marketing itself as a medical hub: http://www.visitjacksonville.com/mee...aptist-health/
