Hello, I may have a job opportunity at the City Hall Annex downtown in Jacksonville. I know nothing about Jacksonville, and my main priority is to avoid crime areas at all costs. I would like a apartment in a diverse area, nice paced, I'm a Christian so I really want to avoid bars, clubs, rowdiness. But I like fast paced areas, shopping centers, places to have fun, a lot of things to do, I used to live in NYC for a while and I enjoyed it there, I would like something like that. I will be probally making 30k to start at jacksonville, but I want something safe, oh yeah and diverse if possible. Also working at City hall Annex downtown, is there anything I should be worried about, like with the surrounding area and all. Any other information will be great like how to avoid crime, what areas to avoid etc, I'll be using a navigation system to get used to the area. Thanks and God Bless.

Have you decided what you want to spend for an apt?
The Southside area would be about 25 to 30 mins to your job.
There are tons of nice quiet areas.
Let us know your budget and we can be more specific.
Are you coming yourself or do you have a family.
Stay far away from the NW side

Thanks my fast, I think I'll spend about $600-900 for a apartment really price doesn't matter I just want something nice so something lower than $600 will be nice. I'll also be coming by myself to work and live, as I'm single. Thanks and God Bless.

A nice area closer to downtown would be nice. I just want to be far away from trouble as possible.

Hi HeavenSoldier,

To be in a decent apartment in a good area, I would agree with Myfask and stay on the higher end of your budget - the $800 range should work for you.

Downtown itself is not anything like NYC. Maybe in the future it will be, that is what the hope is, but right now our downtown has a long way to go. There is life by day, but once the workday ends, much of the people leave downtown. So while you could technically rent downtown, based on your post I have a feeling you might not want to.

Right outside of Downtown are the first ring neighborhoods. The ones to consider here would be San Marco, Avondale and Riverside:

Riverside has 5 Points, which could be comparable to the East Village in NYC....lots of funky shops, street vibe, that kind of thing. if you don't like edgy, then you might not like Riverside.

Avondale has a small shopping and eating strip that is nice. You'll find more boutiques here than funky shops. An NYC comparison here might be the Upper West Side/Upper East Side.

San Marco would be my favorite of the three. It's upscale boutiques and restaurants, galleries, theaters, etc. A 'Greenwich Village meets Upper East Side' kind of thing.

All three of these areas above would be worth looking into. The only downsides are 1) price - the better rentals will be pricey due to the desirability and 2) because these are older neighborhoods (1920's, 30's & 40's), you will not find many 'modern day' apartments - for those you'd have to go outside the area.

Because of the lack of modern day apartments and price of the areas above, many people rent in the Baymeadows area or further out by 9A. These areas tend to have a lot of rental options, plenty of nearby conveniences, and you would still have a decent commute to Downtown.

If you want to look further out, try looking at the SouthEast quadrant of the city. These areas have an abundance of decent, good, and luxury rentals:

Baymeadows Road
Southside Blvd
Gate Parkway
Kernan Blvd
Beach Blvd (stay east of 9A)
Atlantic Blvd (stay east of 9A)

Hope that help.

Don't know how you feel about it, but I love those older apartments in the quad buildings. There are several of them in San Marco, including right on San Marco Blvd. It's a different lifestyle than the brand new, gym and pool gated complexes, a number of inconveniences- dated kitchen, bath & closets...but the history of it.... I think that it just adds to the feel of living in San Marco.
