I am looking at apt's in the Jacksonville area and obviously some seem better then others. My question is when looking at these through various sites, is there any zip code(or area) when I see it, I should just keep moving. Let me know, thanks.

Depends. Zipcodes are an arbitrary division. For example, Avondale is one of the the nicest & most popular neighborhoods in the city, but a couple miles down the road there is a pretty darn rough part of town....all in the same zip code (32205). One end of Edgewood Ave is very nice & upscale, but just a couple miles down the road it's NOT an area you'd ever want to live in. The more dense, urban zipcodes of 32202, 32204, 32205, 32206, & even 32207 will be this way.

Once you get out into the burb's zipcodes are a better indication of what's what. However, even then, the Beaches have very nice areas in the same zip code as sketchy areas.

32208 & 32209 are the only 2 that'd i'd say you not even eant to consider. 32254 & 32219 you are probably wasting your time, but perhaps not.

Default possibly relocating to jax - can you advise?

Looking for some honest answers please. Have been reading blogs on this site re Jax and most are not very flattering. My husband has been offered a job transfer to Jax and I am having a difficult time accepting this option. It will be a promotion as well as pay raise but money isn't everything. However, to be fair, I am willing to consider the move and try to find out what it has to offer.

I am a small town girl at heart. We currently live in a rural town in Pennsylvania just 1 hour north of Philadelphia. I have lived in NYC, New Orleans, and Houston, so I am indeed familiar with city living. I LOVE the mountains, hills and valleys, appreciate all 4 seasons but enjoy summer the LEAST. I dislike being hot. In other words, do you think there is anything in Jax, in a social/entertainment area, that will provide me some enjoyment?

Children are grown and all living throughout the United States so schools are not an issue. It will just be my husband and me, both 50 years old/young. We prefer to live in a community that is NOT vanilla, i.e. shopping strips/malls, chain restaurants, etc. Some character and personality to our surroundings would be desired. Our price range is up to $250,000. Would you please suggest some areas for us to consider based on the above mentioned preferences?

Also, what about bugs? Palmetto bugs? Does everyone have these disgusting things? Is one able to get rid of them or are they just a fact of life in Jax?

What about traffic. From what I read, there are more highways than not in the Jax area. Is traffic always heavy? Our travels here in PA always consists of back roads through small towns, past farms, fields, valleys, cattle grazing, etc. What do the travels in your area offer as far as scenery is concerned?

My husband's company will be sending us down to Jax this May to "check it out" before making our final decision. Would like to look at some homes while we are there and drive around to some sights of culture or whatever while we are there. Any advise would be truly appreciated.

Thanks. Terri

- search for 'Riverside Avondale Springfield San Marco' in City-Data and you'll find your answer. Look through a few pages of results. 250k will go far in Springfield, pretty far in Riverside, not as far in Avondale or San Marco. But i'm not sure what you need in a house.

Have been reading blogs on this site re Jax and most are not very flattering.

as has been noted by others, CD seems to be a green light to bash everything you don't personally like. so it's a lot of negativity, unfortunately. also, since Jax is so large, many people have no clue about certain areas of thier city, which doesn't help.

Other things...bugs aren't bad, just spray. Traffic is fine, unless you travel certain routes. It's best to live not too too far from work, if able. It's hot here probably 5 months out of the year. We do have 4 true seasons though. Cold weather stays for a few months typically. Mild the other 4 months out of the year.

If you want the kind of neighborhood you described, these agents specialize in just those areas:

Amanda Searle: Historic Homes for Sale Jacksonville FL Real Estate For Sale Downtown Real Estate Riverfront Properties Waterfront Properties Condos for Sale Jacksonville FL Lofts for Sale Jacksonville FL downtown jacksonville (http://www.intownjacksonville.com/index.htm - broken link)
Shawn McGuire: Shawn McGuire: Dwellings In-town Real Estate Specialist / Jax FL
Reggie Fountain: Reggie Fountain&#8217s Profile in Jacksonville, FL - Trulia Voices

Amanda & Shawn's websites have some great info on those neighborhoods.

Avoid 32209, 32208, 32206, 32202, 32218 (north 32218 is growing though...but still very redneck). actually.....Jacksonville is generally seperated by the rivers. Anything North of the St. Johns is considered the Northside (This includes oceanway...mostly white....mostly rednecks...but there are some newer nice areas popping up.) West of the river is Westside...westside is more country. Orange Park has some newer developments (Oak Leaf)..IMO Blanding is hell with traffic. South of the river is Mandarin and South Side (this is where I would look). East of the river is Arlington and the Beaches. Not my cup of tea...but I have friends that love the beach. The newer stuff is around 32258...heading towards St. John's County (just south of Jacksonville) A lot of people are moving out...since they will still be a short drive from the city.

Doesn't sound like Jacksonville is your place. Bugs suck...We are very clean...but Palmettos will get into your house anyway. (and they are basically large flying cockroaches). It gets VERY hot...but almost every building has central air. You do get used to it. I would check out Avendale (cool feel..kinda pricey)...Ortega...or even Middleburgh (very country....very hick)

fsu813 - thanks for the reply. especially appreciate the realtor websites. "bugs aren't bad" ???? hmmmmm....i'm a girl, what can I say? "Hot" 5 months of the year - define "hot" please.

mattyt - thanks too for your reply. appreciate the honesty about the bugs. having once lived in NYC I know they have nothing to do with cleanliness. that's unfortunate since I'm a neat freak. my heart tells me that Jacksonville is not for me but I am sincerely trying to find SOMETHING I will like about it in an effort to be fair with my husband (I don't even know how to swim and of course, have a fear of the water). i think I may be fighting a losing battle here...now, how to convince my husband it's not right for me. thanks again for sharing.

Where just outside of Phila are you ?
I grew up right out side of Phila and there are a couple of other folks on here from PA so we might be able to suggest an area of Jax that is similar

Hi Karla. I'm in Pennsburg, just 10 miles north of Quakertown. Are you familiar? I am so beside myself with this pending decision. I cry all the time. Hopefully there is something in Jax that will touch me.

Bugs arnt bad? Is there any where in the US where they are worse is the real question? I dont think so.

High humidity=lots of bugs. Some people just think this place is paradise and cannot for the life of them see any possible faults.
