I am planning on returning to Florida and want to live in Jacksonville. Most people, when asked what they think of the City, say it is a wonderful place. Someone did say they went there on vacation once and could not stand the awful smell from the paper plants.

Is this true?

Paper plants in Jacksonville? Where? I know there are some north of here, but not in Duval county.

There's a recycling mill on W Beaver St. Not sure if that's where the "smell" would come from...the others I know are further north. Generally its just a bad smell put out as a by product of the pulping process, so although it may smell gross, it's not really harmful.

Don't worry about it, you'll be fine. Do you like the smell of coffee? Maxwell House coffee has a very pronounced smell, but really every place has its negatives.

Diana-

How long ago were your friends in Jax? When I lived here years ago, there was a really bad smell in Jax, not sure if it was paper mills, but it was bad. All that I have smelled since moving back here 6 years ago, as Michaeldee said, is the Maxwell House plant... and that smells wonderful if you like the smell of coffee.

Wow ... that's a blast from the past ...

I think the paper mills were shut down around 1986. Something like that.

I sure hope not because my husband just got a job offer from one last week! There's one in Jax and at least one in Fern. Beach.

2 in Fernandina.
You do smell them sometimes, but not 24/7.
Regardless, any paper mill smell you get in Jax is probably not from FB.

I don't know about that...I think with the right wind, you can definitely smell that paper mill smell that far away. Especially since the only one in Jax is all recycled. Either way, I was just responding to the post that the mills were all closed.
