Smile Relocating from Detroit, MI to Jacksonville

Hi there. I have a question for all those who are familar with Jacksonville.

My fiance and I are looking to relocate from Detroit, MI to Florida next year, along with some of his family. We are all simply tired of Michigan. Anyway, he doesn't know where he wants to move in Fla., yet. His uncle owns a house near Daytona Beach. However, I want to move to Jacksonville. We're both biracial and I heard it's one of the top 10 places for blacks and I feel as though I'd stand a better chance of landing a job. I'm working at a newspaper right now and majored in journalism.

So, would Jacksonville be an ideal place for us? What's the weather/costs/job market like? Any other input? Thanks so much!

Hi CreoleHottie,

Jax is a nice city and you'd probably like it.

It is diverse, moreso the closer you are to the city center or the beaches, so I would suggest living in one of those areas as opposed to the more bedroom communities or rural areas.

You'd probably want to check online for employment possibilities, others would be better than me at suggesting places to look (Monster.com, that kind of thing).

You might want to make a plan to visit the family member in Daytona and then driving up to Jax and spending some time here, that will give you some perspective on the two places.

Overall, you will find better employment opportunities in Jax, and that alone may end up being a deciding factor between the two.

The weather and beaches are great.....you rarely hear people in Jax complain much about either .

That's cool that you saw the Black Enterprise Magazine article on the top 10 cities for Blacks. Duval County (Jacksonville) and Clay County (Orange Park, Middleburg) are the two counties that I'm familiar with and you won't have a problem for the most part in those two counties as fair as racial issues go. You shouldn't have a problem in St Johns County (St Augustine) either. As a whole, the metro is diverse and the people are chill.

As far as journalism jobs are concerned, the Florida Times Union seems to be on some sort of hiring spree so you may want to start looking there. You have Folio and a couple of spanish publications such as Eco Latino(they have a website) if you know the language. I've heard from people that have first hand knowledge that WTLV/WJXX have a number of minorities in "behind the scenes" operations as well on air talent. Give it a shot.

The weather is good. It will get cold in late Jan thru the first two weeks of Feb and that's it for really cold weather. But you folks in D-Town know about cold weather so Jacksonville's so called cold weather will make you laugh. The summers are good and just like today and yesterday, the humidity was 88% at 10:30am this morning with a nice temp of 86. That's what you're in for during the summertime. But it's all good.
