LOL YEAH RIGHT

Not liking sports is unAmerican.

Hmmm what did I like about Jax?

Hemming Plaza - I love downtown parks where you can play cheese and converse with locals.

The Landing - Jacksonville's location for civic events. July 4th, New Years, The Christmas Tree in the courtyard. That where the folks in Jax get down.

The JTA Skyway - Im a city boy, so I love city things. I would ride the Skyway because that was what it was made for....TO RIDE IT. Just wish they had a Station in Riverside/5Points, San Marco Square & Sports Complex...if not for that Id still be in Jacksonville.

Folio Weekly - I love reading alternative rags. Thats where the culture is.

MOSH & Friendship Fountain - One the best places for a date. I took about 6 different women to MOSH & the Planetarium. Parked at Jefferson Station and rode the Skyway to San Marco Station, the reaction was always consistent, especially when going over the Acosta. Sometimes I would go to Friendship Park and watch all the skateboard kids do their tricks and stuff. Had a city boy feel it.

Jaguars & Suns - my two favorite teams. Jax didn't have a MLB team so if you wanted to support the home team you went with the Suns. I tried NOT to look at them as a minor league club, but Jacksonville's club. Braves & Falcons are slowly creeping into my heart though. Hey Im a homer, what can I do?

Sports Complex!!! - Jacksonville is one of the few cities with all its major venues on the same area. In some cities the Arenas, Ballparks & Stadiums are no where near each other which is very very dumb. Jacksonville is one of the few to due its sports section of town right.

Skyline - hey man the Modis is skyblue in the day and blackish purple at night. The building changes colors!! Ride across the Fuller Warren....need I say more?

I have many dislikes, but these are things you Jacksonville folks should appreciate. If you haven't yet check em out. Single guys try the Skyway to MOSH date thing.....Homerun everytime!

Obviously you care about your little guy, and by your use of the term "Godson" I would assume you are a trusted friend who has agreed to be his spiritual mentor. Please consider that the "scummy" people you refer to are Someone Else's beloved children. Passion, while commendable, is only as helpful as the action it inspires.

there is a lot of negative things about jax. the high crime areas actually aren't the areas you think are highest crime areas. however, jacksonville in general isn't a high crime area. they greatly exaggerate figures based on ratio and stuff. it's definately alot crazier in other parts of florida like the miami area. and the conservative movement and confederacy movement is definately strong here. you can ignore it if you chose to though. but there are tributes to the confederacy on monuments downtown, on school names, ect. i have to say that because it really gets in the way of someone from more progressive parts of the country from really enjoying themselves.
on the positive note. the jaguar games are cheapest in the league. if you enjoy sports. our sports are really accessible. minor league baseball is cheap. orlando magic games are only two hours away. i think there is a minor league hockey team too. if you are religious we have more churches than any city i've seen. literally a church on every street in every part of town. mostly christian demonations but also have active other religions. large jewish community. large muslim mosque. the biggest pride of jacksonville is the natural surroundings. there plenty of rivers, ponds, and of course the beaches. the weather is nice and it's plenty of sunshine and rain. for entertainment there is the Art Walk downtown first wednesday of every month from 5p-9p. it's quite an event. then there is an art festival at riverside every saturday from 8a-2p i think that's not so big but good for family.
finally, if you have a family the school system is oddly ranged. the public school system houses some failing schools but also houses some of the best schools in the country. Stanton College Preparatory School was the #1 school in the country for a couple of years i believe.

Default Jacksonville is great

I think like every city you have the good parts and bad parts..and i say as long as you stay in the good areas and avoid the bad areas in the dark you will be fine It has all the big city facilities with the small town feel. There is always something to do and lots of new places to try out. I run a blog called Life In Jacksonville Florida if you are ever looking for things to do.

You're probably thinking of the Acosta, which was built in 1991. It's concrete with purple/blue neon lights at night.

Main Street Bridge was 1941 (blue)
Hart Bridge was 1967 (green)
Matthews was 1953 (red/purple)
I-95 was redone in 2002

I agree, all the cool downtown bridges are a great thing about Jax. They look beautiful at night.
