No more public school
After three years in Duval, I have decided to pull my kids out of public school and put them in private school. I am using my home equity line of credit to do it, not something I wanted to do, but it was imperative that they get out. I came here with two bright, enthusiastic kids. Now they are just bumping along in the medicocrity of the Duval Public School system. And they were both in "A" schools.
There are many good teachers in the public school here, but they are burnt out, required to jump through hoops that have little to do with actual learning and just waiting for retirement to kick in. Very sad, as I have always been a big proponent of public schools.

at least your saw the light before it was too late!
one of the biggest problems with public schools is that they cannot segregate (bad word) the bad kids, the trouble makers, the ones who don't want to learn from the decent kids, the ones who are willing to do what it takes. So what happens is that so much time is wasted on the bad ones that it hurts the good ones.
The public schools wind up catering to the low end of the curve and the kids and the high end get shafted.
It is a shame but that's what the liberalistas have done to our schools, good luck with private school, you won't be sorry.

I agree with all that you say except I don't think it can be pinned on the liberals. But, other than that, I agree. Oh, except "the ones who are willing to do what it takes". I think many are doing the best that they can.
But they do just throw them all in a big pot and I guess all that melting is producing an inferior stew.
During the last part of school, my son saw a girl get knocked unconscious and taken away in an ambulance, a 13 YO was arrested for taking a handgun to school and a 12 YO was arrested for selling pot. They have phys ed once a week in elementary school. I was teaching a class in a middle school (also an "A") where the gym class had over 80 kids- coed- playing dodgeball, which is called something else now) on the basketball court! And I haven't (and won't!) even get into the classroom issues.

I just sent a PM. I had heard that St. Johns was very good. There are several good ones here. My granddaughter wants to go to Bolles... definitely not in my budget. Maybe they have scholarships!

The ones given for maintaining the messiest room are really hard to get, though!
The school only goes to 8th grade, so that will be something for her to work toward.

What I meant by doing what it takes is they show up to school prepared, homework done, pencils sharpened, and conforming to the rules, it wasn't about intelligence or test scores.
I do not care to engage in a political argument but it is the liberal thinking that emasculates teachers and administrators, they are afraid to enforce discipline and afraid to segregate the problem children, you wouldn't want to hurt their feelings, eh?
Many of the problem kids wouldn't last 5 minutes in a private or a parochial school, why? because they don't tolerate improper behavior, the public schools are forced to accommodate even the worst of the worst kids and they keep them mainstreamed no matter how bad they are, like I said the presence of kids like take time an energy away from the staff and that hurts the education of the kids that want to be educated.

You said it. My son was disrespectful to the busdriver once and a school administrator called to tell me. He ASKED me if I would MIND if my son apologized to the bus driver!!!! My son had already told me about it the night before and he was already going to apoligize and was put on restriction. I shared that with the guy and told him that if he wanted my son to scrub the bathroom floor with a toothbrush, he'd have my permission.
