Some of you may know that I've been looking to relocate for a few months now, well I finally got the chance
I have an interview for a very promising position next week. The problem is in my current position I am covering 2 people next week as they are out for some very important family events (graduation). The only other person that can do my job is my supervisor. I know if I ask to take the day off they will more than likely not allow it. How would you guys handle this?
I'm leaning more to telling them the truth, because my supervisor knows I need to relocate, but am afraid that they will say no which may lead to me calling in "sick" that day and perhaps getting a bad reference.
I don't know your history but my gut reaction as an employer would be to call the prospective new employer and reschedule the interview for a time that won't mess with your current employee schedule.
If you explain to the prospective new employer that you really want to go through the interview process but you don't want to mess up where your present employer's schedule is concerned and don't want to leave them high and dry, they'll work with you. If they won't even consider you then you don't want to work for or with them. Work ethics rule!
Hopefully if you explain the reasons that you can't make it next week they will actually see that as a positive that you don't want to leave your current job in a bad spot.

I'd just call in sick. Telling your current employer the truth isnt going to help. They will see it has you putting the other place as your priority.
"Hi boss, i know this week we are short on staff but i need a day off for an interview."
You think any boss will enjoy hearing that?
Telling the place you want to work to reschedule is risky. You are the one that is looking for a new job. I'm sure you aren't the only one they will interview. You need to make an effort not to stick out in a bad way. How do you know if someone else interviewing is in the same position you are and will call in sick.
Depending on the time and distance, maybe work a halfday.
I would call in sick too. If you don't usually call in sick often, just say you ate something lousy. If they need a doctors note go to the doctor tell them that you need a note, and they'll give it to you as long as you give them a reason to give it to you.
I would try to reschedule first, and if that isn't an option, then call in sick.
Its possible the company wants to get all the interviews done in one week, and so you'll either have to try to schedule the interview for before or after work, or call in sick.
Why would your supervisor give you a bad reference for taking a sick day? I would definitely not tell him you need the day off for an interview.
Don't tell him/her you need the day off for an interview. Call in sick, hope you get the job, and move on.
