I attended a FREE seminar on how to find a job at a local community college recently. What shocked me was how few people attended. The people that were there appeared to be demoralized, burned out and desperate.

The two speakers spent most of the time in the seminar telling people how to be a better job applicant. For example, how to be more effective in the interview, and how to write a good resume and cover letter.

I asked some people at the end of the event how they liked it. The general feeling was the speaker was great but it was a waste of time because having a good looking resume is not going to get you a job with 500 applicants. Or will having a firm handshake or pleasant personality in an interview. In today's economy having an attractive resume is not enough.

So, would you read books about job hunting or attend a seminar on resumes, cover letters and interview skills? Why or why not?

May I ask why you were there as you're employed? Also you seem to already think you know HOW people should go about looking for a job based on some of your other posts. So, just curious.

Or is this just another way to start yet another thread on CD while you're "slow at work"? Not getting enough email today maybe?

I attended to see what they had to say. There is so little work for me to do at my current job that I am scared. OK?

Whether someone is employed or not, if they feel a seminar can improve their application skills and it's free....why not. Personally, I wouldn't want to attend a seminar for that purpose. I would rather attend one on the skills needed to perform a particular job.

The question was would you attend a seminar on job hunting skills? why or why not? It didn't have anything to do with email...

The OP constantly posts that things are so slow at her work she emails her married "friend" dozens of times a day...........

Blue Sky Resumes - Submit your resume to them for FREE and they will give you a good headstart to discover what your resume is lacking. I did years ago and it was the best thing I ever did.

It's always good to learn new things. But let's face facts, unscrupulous recruiters have destroyed the standard job search process. If you want a job you don't send a resume then wait and certainly you don't fill out online resume forms all day.

You should have a resume and bring it to the first meeting with an employee of the company you're trying to be hired at. Cover letters are a great way to introduce yourself to a company but leave out the resume until you are asked to come in for an interview. Interview skills are always a good thing to have.

First things first: A resume is used to get the interview...thats it. If you get an interview then it served its purpose.

Thats being said, I would advise anyone to take a resume and cover letter writing class, and at least know the basics for what not to say at an interview, and how to present yourself.

I have had resume writing classes since high school, (have had no less than three mandatory classes at various colleges) and my resume is still not as good as I would like. Most of my resume skills were honed over the years just by the amount of applications I have sent out, and feedback I have gotten.

Like anything, it does take practice. And you need to really know what you are applying for, and how to sell your skills even if they are from an unelated position. Every application should have a custom resume and cover letter for your best chance of success.
