I had my resume posted on a few Job search websites, it didn't get me one decent lead on a job. Complete waste of time if you ask me. I do know someone that got hired by Sirius Radio because they had there resume posted online, you have to have a very specific set of skills to be even worth the bother.
You will get endlessly spammed on Career Builder for those all commission cold calling selling insurance jobs regardless of how you filter visibility on your contact information. When you hide your contact info, Career Builder sets you up with a cloaked email (similar to how Craigs List works to provide anonymity) that forwards to your real email address. Those spammers often have no idea what your real email address is. They send the spam in hopes you will reply to it and they can then capture your contact information. Keep in mind that the financial service businesses pay big money to Career Builder to send these spams to anyone and everyone who puts a resume on the site.
Monster and Careerbuilder postings usually only get you staffing agencies, for-profit colleges, and multi-level marketers. Most legit jobs post an ad and wait for applicants to apply. I have had a few good contacts from Linked-In as others have said. Otherwise public profiles often invite scammers and bottom feeders.
