I took an interesting Evening Adult and Community Education class the other day at a local High School. It was called "How to find a job."
The class was great but the majority of the students were not so impressive. A good number of them were ESL students many as old as 30-35 years old who have never had a paying job before in their life. They were completely naive about the employment process in America. They knew absolutely nothing about resumes, cover letters, and interview skills or how companies recruited and staffed jobs in America. Few if any of them had heard of the term professional reference and they surely did not have any one who could speak on their behalf.
If American born folks with Masters Degrees can not find a survival job in today's economy how do the masses of immigrants who appear to be completely lost?
Who hires people in their 20s/30s with no employment record or references?
Always wondered the same thing especially in NYC where cost of living is highest in country. I mean how do all those recently arrived immigrants get hired and can afford to live anywhere within the greater NYC metro area
It's important to remember that not all immigrants are uneducated or lack job-hunting skills. They do have employers and universities and resumes in other countries. These people typically have little trouble finding a job in the US.
The immigrants who have no skills find jobs the same way citizens with no skills or history find jobs. They start out as laborers or working for a day wherever they can find someone willing to take them on. Eventually they find someone who will let them stay longer, and they build a work history. Most though, are not looking to move into the mainstream workforce within their lifetime. It's what they hope for for their children.
Although I have an employment record .I have no references.I hate it when an potential employeer forces you to put something down...when I have nothing.

I'm with you edwardianlady. I'm assuming you are talking about professional references. Seems like it's hard to get in without any references even with employment history. I've had couple of references at one point but the longer you are out the less likely you will have any references. I no longer have any references at this point. Along with no references, a long employment gap due to no references doesn't sit well with employers.

Then do what the TV pitchmen do and fake it. References now a days are completely pointless anyways. Anyone can find someone (or pay someone) to say nice things and employers will give salary title and dates of employment.

Can you also answer the question as why you don't have any references?

MSchemist80, I am sorry you hold this view but it is wrong. You apparently have a lot anger against the current hiring process. you know, it may not be the best but I have yet seen a better one. I can also assure you, from what I have read from you, it is YOU who have the problem, not the process. You really allowed your ego to get in your way. If you don't let your ego go and start learning how to be better, you will continue to be bitter.
Reference is one of the key point in the hiring process. Some may not pay that much attention but I do. I typically spend 30 min with each reference and I compare notes with each other. If i see inconsistency, that's where red flags coming up.
